Angelus Funeral Home - San Antonio Obituary

Santos Lopez Elizondo (Garcia) “Sandy” earned her wings and passed away peacefully at home in Adkins, Texas surrounded by immediate family on August 27, 2022. She was one month shy of her 95th birthday. She was born on September 27, 1927 to Mauricio Lopez (Salinas) and Maria de Jesus (Jesusita) Flores in Seguin, Texas.

Sandy attended Beauty School in San Antonio in the 1940s. She was the owner of Maurice’s Party House, a successful dance hall and party venue for more than 50 years. She enjoyed her rose bushes and had a green thumb for flowers and trees. Sandy will always be remembered for her ponytail.

She married Maurice Briones Elizondo on September 5, 1945. They were married for 33 years and had two sons until his untimely death due to Lung Cancer. Sandy was the matriarch of Maurice’s Party House and she ran the dance hall, party venue, gas station and met second husband Ben Castillo Garcia. They were together for 21 years until his untimely death from Renal Cancer. She continued to run Maurice’s Party House until she retired in 2010.

Sandy loved life, loved people and always greeted you with a smile. Sandy knew no strangers, if she didn’t know you personally, she would say you reminded her of someone.

Throughout her illness, she put her trust in God but missed working in her yard to care for her rose bushes and wave at people as they drove by her home. She loved caring for her flower bushes, potted plants, gambling in Las Vegas and traveling the US with her husband. Mom loved fishing at the coast house, the views from the lake house, San Antonio Spurs and UTSA Roadrunners. In the end she enjoyed Fiesta Fridays at her home or at the Ranch surrounded by the closest family and friends while enjoying Barbecue.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Maurice B. Elizondo Jr., sisters Antonia, Angelita, Elvira, Maria Luisa, Lucia and brothers baby Jose and Meliton Lopez. She is survived by an older sister Genoveva Fernandez, son Dr. E. Edward Elizondo (Adelaide Emery NP); granddaughter Sarah Morfin Clookey and husband DJ Clookey; great-grandchildren Dominique and Danielle Guadiana and Nathaniel and Jeremiah Castillo.

Thank you to her caregivers Bonnie Dugi, Ryan Adam Taylor and Ragina Robinson. OpusCare Hospice Staff nurses Jeff, Catherine and Nicole. Her nurse aide Terrie.
