HAMPTON - Sara Neff Alligood died March 1, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Rural Retreat, Virginia on December 9, 1936. She grew up on her beloved Neffield Farm which always held a special place in her heart. Sara attended Marion Junior College and graduated from Newberry College in South Carolina. After teaching in Martinsville, Virginia, Sara came to Hampton to begin a 41 year teaching career. First, as an English teacher at Hampton High School and then continuing as a social studies teacher at Kecoughtan High School. During these years, Sara touched countless lives through her unyielding dedication and passion for inspiring her students. Sara was always involved in a variety of educational committees and special groups like the Junior League and Delta Kappa Gamma. Upon her arrival in Hampton, she met her future husband, Leon Lewis Alligood, and they were later married on November 30, 1964 in Rural Retreat. During their 51 year marriage, Sara and Leon enjoyed traveling, dining out, and spending time with their friends and family. One of her greatest joys in life was her love for her church, Gloria Dei Lutheran, where she was a charter member, as well as a faithful long time member of the choir. Sara is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Ruth Neff, her sister Ann Neff Norris, and her husband Leon. She is survived by her son Kevin Neff Alligood and his fiance' Blakely Ann Powell, her daughter Kristy Fyfe and her husband Kevin Fyfe, her grandchildren Cameron and Lauren Fyfe, and her cherished nieces Debbie Farrington and her husband Mike, Kathy Stone and Kimberly Norris and her great nieces and nephew. A celebration of Sara's life will be held on Saturday, March 17 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hampton. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 12:00, immediately followed by the memorial service, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to the Gloria Dei Memorial Fund, 250 Foxhill Road, Hampton, VA, 23669.

Not sure what to say?

So sorry for your loss. She was a great teacher who always inspired us to follow our dreams and she made sure we stayed focused. Truly gonna miss her.

Mrs. Alligood was one of our sweetest
neighbors. Years ago when we moved to
Hampton, she and Leon gave us the warmest
welcomes. We miss her kindness and great
sense of humor.
