"Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."
~ Proverbs 31:28

Sara Elizabeth Briscoe was born on July 4, 1940, in St. Mary's County, MD., to the late Leon Alexander and Sarah Ann Herbert Roberts. She was the third of 13 children. Sara attended school in St. Mary's County until moving to Washington, DC. At that time, she then attended Dunbar High School.

At an early age, Sara met her best friend and true love, John X. Briscoe, Sr. (Johnny). Johnny loved her so much so, that he followed her to Washington, DC to be closer to her. On February 27, 1960, they became one at Nativity Catholic Church. From this union, John, Jr., Justine, Jerome and Jessena were born.

Sara was affectionately known by family and friends as Sally, and Granny by her grand and great-grandchildren. Her unwavering love for her family was her number one priority. She made sure that there was something planned for every holiday, especially Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. You can rest assure there would be a turkey, dressing, stuffed ham, greens, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes and marshmallows, and ambrosia, just to name a few dishes. She absolutely loved to cook and was great at it. She also made sure that Granny's babies had lots of "goodies" to take home with them.

Being born on Independence Day, Sara was truly an independent woman! Every year
she was celebrated by her family, who loved and adored her, with a huge cook-out. For her 80th birthday, she requested two balloons and two flowers for her "drive-by" celebration. She received 125 balloons and 250 flowers. What a blessing!

Sara had a very giving heart and she loved everyone she came in contact with; everyone certainly loved her in return. She had a tremendous love for children. She volunteered her time in various capacities: Ketcham Elementary School; the Brownie Girl Scout Troop at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church; and worked at Jovial Jester Day Care Center. Sara had an extraordinary love for arts and crafts, with her favorite being needle point. She often "gifted" the projects she made. Win or lose, she was a dedicated Washington Football Team (formerly the Washington Redskins) fan.

On Monday, November 8, 2021 at Washington Hospital Center, God called His faithful servant, Sara, to gain the wings she earned.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Sarah Roberts; son, Jerome Briscoe, Sr.; grandsons, George Middleton, III, and Jermal Briscoe; siblings, Thomas Roberts, William Roberts, Frances Roberts, Joseph Herbert, Sr., Mable Squire, Julia Robinson, and Crawford Roberts.

To cherish beautiful memories, she leaves her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, John X. Briscoe, Sr.; her son, John (Bernadette) Briscoe, Jr., daughters, Justine Briscoe Middleton, Jessena (Shawn) Briscoe Edwards; grandchildren, John, III, Joshua (Shirell), Jerome and Jermica Briscoe, Ashley Ford, Dynithia and DeShawn Middleton, Chanda Galloway, Dexter Morton, Jr., and Tiaira Adams; great grandchildren, Jada, Justice, Jaydence, Jaxson, Jacoby, Brooke, Jerome, Zion, and J'Laila Briscoe, Jermese and Jerniah Perkins, Dy'Mon, Ariale, and Ariaunna Hill, Blayk Smith, Sherwood Armstrong, III, Sir Adams, and Amory Webb; siblings, James, Gertrude, Vincent (Vanessa), Allen, and Twanda Roberts; sisters-in-law, Katrina and Sandra Roberts, and Mary Briscoe; brothers-in-law, Francis, James, and Charles Briscoe, and Lawrence Squire; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Sara will be truly missed and will live on in each of the lives she touched.

Family and friends will gather on Thursday, November 18, 2021 for visitation at 10 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1600 Morris Road, S.E., Washington, D.C. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20906.
