Sara McGinn Lyman, beloved wife of John Lyman, bonus mother to Anthony Lyman (Aston, PA) and Krista Lyman-Rupertus (Chuck) and sister to Ernie Schwenk (Vikki) died peacefully after a short but incredibly courageous battle with cancer on January 20, 2022. Sara was 75 years old.
Sara is also survived by her grandchildren whom she adored, David, Hannah and Alex.
Sara has gone to rest with her beloved son, Matthew McGinn (2020), her sister and best friend Beverly Shultz (1989) and her big brother John Schwenk (2004).
Sara grew up in Newtown Square PA in “The Avenues”. She loved roaming around playing baseball and badminton with the neighborhood kids. She was a proud graduate of Marple Newtown class of 1963. Sara was a class officer and loved connecting with her fellow classmates. Sara was the coordinator for her class reunions which she looked forward to every 5 years. It always gave her great joy to catch up with old friends and exchange stories.
Sara worked for 45 years at Frames & Company in Newtown Square, PA doing design and layout. Her repeat customers adored her and relied on her for her keen sense of design. Sara could make any print look like a priceless piece of art by painstakingly matting and framing and molding every detail. She took great pride in knowing her design skills were beautifying her client’s homes.
Sara was an incredibly active person and never missed an opportunity to travel with the love of her life John. She travelled extensively throughout the USA, Canada and Europe even though she had a great fear of flying. It was part of her spirit to push through that fear and enjoy everything life had to offer. She was an avid skier. Nothing made her happier than being above the tree line in the Rocky Mountains with her grandchildren. When she wasn’t on the slopes in the winter, she enjoyed the warm sunshine in Cabo San Lucas and Palm Springs. She loved to play golf, and had not one…not two…but three yes THREE holes-in-one at Stone Harbor Country Club on hole #12! For 20 years Sara and John had a bay home in Avalon where she enjoyed sunsets, boat rides red wine, vodka gimlets, and sharing her beautiful home with friends and family. One of Sara’s greatest passions was being involved in Al-Anon and NAMI. Sara was everyone’s biggest cheerleader and never gave up hope that people with mental illness and addiction could find a place in this world where they are thriving. She was a great comfort to countless people in the organizations she supported.
Sara will be deeply missed by her friends (“the girls”), family and all who knew her. She will especially be missed by her adoring husband, John.
Due to COVID surges her service will be private for immediate family with a Celebration of Life service in April of 2022. Details will be forthcoming.
Memorial donations in Sara’s name may be offered to The Hansen Foundation (hansenfoundationnj.org), which is an organization near and dear to Sara’s heart. The Hansen Foundation, Inc / 4 E Jimmie Leeds Rd., Suite 3 / Galloway, NJ 08205.
