Not sure what to say?

Pam and Walter, I am sorry your brother passed away last year. We are cousins, but I forget the details. I think your grandmother Lind was the sister of my grandfather Johnson. My parents were David and Denise Johnson. They have passed as has my brother Jim. Deep condolences. Jana Partain, Knoxville, Tenn.

Scott and I dated for a time during our college years in Austin. Scott was a gentle soul of great intelligence and spirit. He read poetry to me and spoke in free-form phrases that could melt my heart. Although I had lost track of him over the years, I'm not surprised that he was an accomplished writer who stood up against the odds to report the stories of those who were disadvantaged. Scott always had a great spirit and a well of compassion. He was a gentle man, and the world was a better...

I knew Scott while was working with Central American refugees in the Rio Grande Valley, 1982-87. Scott was an exceptional reporter, always searching for and making sure he reported, the truth. Not the truth as he saw it, but as it was told him by his many contacts. He was a humane, eminently decent human being of immense intelligence and sensitivity. When refugees were victimized or their rights were violated, and this happened so often, you could count on Scott to be there with us, and to...

Walter, Pam, you are in my prayers and I share your sense of loss. My mom, Zula, kept me informed of his courageous work on the border; later I heard of his strange illness and held out hope for recovery. I recall him, a wonderful, positive and optimistic young man. He is missed, but alive in so many hearts that he will always be with us. It's hard to lose a brother, but maddening when he stood for truth, justice and fairness for the underrepresented. He was a hero. May God be with you...

Pam,
Scott pursued the truth and you can be very proud of him for his efforts to report the facts. I am sorry to hear of his passing . I appreciate all your family did for the community and for me as a Girl Scout. Your mom and Scott are enjoying a great bowl of ice cream !

Pam,
So sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. You now have another guardian angel.

As an editor of the Texas Observer in the 1980s, I worked with Scott on a number of freelance stories he wrote for the publication. He was a fearless journalist. His passion for the underdog was always evident. He was writing stories about the Valley and the Border that no one else was writing. He was good humored, sometimes churlish, and always on fire about stories he was writing or wanted to be writing. His final years were very sad, but at least we get this chance to remember him again...
