Sheila A. Hoglund (Mauro) of Bow, New Hampshire passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 4, 2024, a few days after her 63rd birthday.

Sheila was born on January 31, 1961 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her lifelong love of art evolved from a young age when she took Saturday classes at the Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh. After graduating from high school in West Mifflin, PA, Sheila earned her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 1983. This is also where she met John, her beloved husband of almost forty years. They moved to New England and Sheila continued her studies, attaining an MFA with teaching certification from Boston University in 1989. She taught art to first through eighth graders at Epsom Central School in Epsom, NH from 1989 to 1995, then to various groups through the Currier Museum outreach program in Manchester, NH. She served on the board of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards of NH. Sheila maintained a well-equipped art room in her home and spent many happy hours there working on projects with her corgi dog nearby. Sheila loved a good mystery story, Disney movies, and, in recent years, Bluey.

Family and friends were an integral part of Sheila's life, and she traveled often to visit and enjoy time with her relatives. She loved sitting with kids at these outings to lead them through amazing art projects which were meticulously prepared for fun to be had by all. Her annual visits to family gatherings in York Beach, Buffalo and the greater Pittsburgh region made for great memories and stories. In addition, she created her own artwork with paint, colored pencils, and collage. Her work and interest inspired John to develop his artistic side.

Sheila Hoglund is survived by John, her husband of 39 years, brother Mark Mauro, sister Kathy Mauro Sparaga (Jim), mother-in-law, Lenita Hoglund, sisters-in-law Mary Hoglund (Michelle) and Carolyn Koutcher (Gary), nieces, nephew, and extended family members across Pennsylvania, New York and New England. Her corgi dog, Indie, was a dear companion at home for the past seven years.

Memorial visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 9th from 4 to 7 PM at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main Street, Concord.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute where Sheila received wonderful care (https://dana-farber.org/gift). Also, to honor Sheila's love of children's art, donations can be made to Currier Museum (https://currier.org/the-tomie-depaola-art-education-fund).

Not sure what to say?

I was so so saddened this morning when I read of Sheila's passing. Sheila was one of the kindest and sweetest of all people! In life it is so rare to find a person of the galiber. The world will be worse off without her in it, but heaven has got a gem in their presence now. Rest in peace Sheila. xoxoxo

One of the best thank you for being such a kid and woman and showing much Love to everyone me and my son's were grateful to have met. Till we meet again ~GRACE AND PEACE

Sheila and I were friends in elementary school. I remember her as a soft spoken, quiet friend with an awesome playhouse in her basement. Because of our friendship, our dads became very goods friends until my dad passed away. Sending my deepest sympathy to her family.

A true blessing to the art educator community in New Hampshire. Shelia was there whenever there was time to volunteer and support art education efforts. I did not have the pleasure of working with her at the Currier, but I know she was cherished by the education staff and the many outreach organizations in which she provided art as a means of wellness. May you rest in knowing how highly regarded you are and the example you have left.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I met Shelia through her sisters-in-law Mary and Michelle. I was always interested in her art and what she was creating. As a fellow teacher, I applaud her dedication to the arts.
Shelia had such wonderful comments about my son’s artwork. I’m so grateful it was shared with her.
I always prayed for her and I am comforted by all the people who loved and support her.

Sheila was the sweetest and dearest younger cousin anyone could have had. My husband, daughter and I had the opportunity to visit Sheila and John in NH. I will always cherish those memories. Heaven has another beautiful angel.
