Shepard Duane Hayes

LUMBERTON — Shepard Duane Hayes died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack on June 9, 2015, at his mother's home in Lumberton. He was 51 years old.

Duane was born on Nov. 5, 1963, in Wilson. He grew up in Lumberton, and graduated in 1982 from Lumberton Senior High School, where he was a standout athlete in football and basketball. He graduated from Chowan College in 1984, and from East Carolina University in 1986. He was self-employed with Expense Reduction Consultants. Duane had a kind heart, a charming smile and a quick wit. He loved sports, jazz music and cooking.

He is survived by his mother, Marjorie S. Hayes, who loved him with all of her heart; his brother, Floyd Conrad Hayes; his sisters, Melodi Hayes, Stephanie Hayes Jarvis (Reed), Freida Hayes, and Luanne Hayes Lasnier (Ken); and his nephew, Matthew Hayes.

He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Ray Hayes, a loss he grieved daily; his sister-in-law, Lisa Lindsey Hayes; and his beloved dogs, Wolfie and Hazel.

A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Godwin Heights Baptist Church in Lumberton. The visitation with the family will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. The family will hold a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Duane's memory to the charity of one's choice.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Psalms 34:18.

Not sure what to say?

Shepard was special. He lived his life without any concern about what others thought of him. He got out of corporate America because he was unwilling to "play the corporate game" of saying what they wanted to hear. He was honest about what they could do better to service their customers when all they cared about was their stock price. He was great in front of his customers because he truly cared about them. I think of him often.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Please find peace and comfort in knowing God cares for you and will help you in your time of need. (Jeremiah 29:12) "you will call me and come and pray to me and I will listen to you."

I just saw this and had know idea. Duane and had been in contact for some time in the past year. I loved this guy and all of his family.Great person tha I shared many good times with! God Bless!

I will forever remember the GREAT times with Duane. From 4th grade through our Graduation at LHS in 1982--there have been many fun times with our friend! I can still remember riding home from football practice in 9th grade with Duane in his grey Grand Prix and listening to Earth Wind and Fire! Or, dreaming up a prank during practice on a fellow teammate to get everyone laughing (and occasionally in trouble). Never afraid to speak his mind, and always confident in his actions--Duane was...

Sending my love and prayers to all of you during
this period of extreme sadness and loss. God will
give you the strength and comfort that you need.
Hold on to that!

Sending much love, and many prayers.

My heart is heavy for the family and for the loss of my dear friend, a compassionate and phenomenal man who saw only the very best in everyone. You shall live forever in my heart, brother.
