Obituary

HONG KONG (AP) — Veteran Hong Kong actor Shih Kien, who played Bruce Lee's archrival in the 1973 movie "Enter the Dragon," has died at age 96.

"With his death, Hong Kong has lost an outstanding performing arts talent," Acting Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Gregory So said in a statement.

Shih died Wednesday afternoon at a Hong Kong hospital with his children by his side, the Ming Pao Daily News reported Friday. The cause was kidney failure, the Apple Daily newspaper said.

Shih made his film debut in 1940 and went on to act in about 350 films, most notably playing villains in films about Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-hong, according to Ming Pao.

He was best known to Western audiences for playing the evil martial arts expert Han in "Enter the Dragon." In the movie, Lee's character is hired by a foreign government to infiltrate Han's island and seeks to avenge his sister's death by Han's bodyguard.

Hong Kong's movie industry mourned Shih's death, with "Infernal Affairs" star Tony Leung Chiu-wai saying he was a big fan of the late actor.

"I grew up watching Uncle Kien's movies. He's an actor I admire and respect a lot. I'm very sad that he has passed away," Apple Daily quoted Leung as saying, referring to Shih by his nickname.

Not sure what to say?

Enter the Dragon, he had a presence, about him. Strong facial features, talking with his facial expressions. Great actor. R I P

great actor

I met him in 1974 at Y.C.Wong Gung Fu in San Francisco Chinatown!

What a blessing to live to be 96 years! Still, it is a sad occasion to say goodbye to your loved one. To the family of Mr Shih, you have my condolences.

I met Mr. Shih about a year after he made Enter The Dragon at Y.C.Wong Gung Fu studio in San Francisco. He performed many sets at our studio and he looked great. We took pictures and i still have it in my gym on the wall with me standing next to him.

I had checked on Mr. Shih over a year ago, and coincidentally tonight AMC in the USA is playing Enter the Dragon and I check on Shih again and one year to the day, he has passed on! Great talent in Chinese film, great longevity and a great big family at his bedside to the end. That's the meaning of a live lived greatly. Now he is up there with Bruce smiling and talking in their native language, two old friends reuniting again. I am sure they are talking about acting, Kung Fu and bock choy!...

Sir I only know you as Han but that character is classic. You are one of my favorite villians. That piece of work stands the test of time. You will never be forgotten. RIP

For Shih...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour...

Shih Kien, I just checked to see where you were about 6 months ago and I found that you were still alive. I was so excited to learn that you were 96 years old. I decided to check on you again to find that you passed away, this really saddens me because you were my childhood villain. I love you for your role in kung fu movies.

"May you rest in peace"
