Shirlee Heda Taraki

Shirlee was one of my dearest and oldest friends. We shared memories of Kabul and an enthusiasm for the language and people of Afghanistan. The Tarakis have generously bestowed their hospitality on me since those early years in Paghman and Kabul. In Chicago Shirlee always had a full program of events and activities I could hardly keep up with, and she is an inspiration to me in her cheer, wit, and affection. She doted on her wonderful family, and I share their sorrow at her passing.

Dear Yusef, Rohiya, Ilyas and Ariana,

Shirlee Taraki was a long time friend of mine. I worked with her helping Afghan families in Chicago and she was a resource to me in understanding The Afghan culture. She was an interesting person and a role model to me and others I'm sure. She was interesting and never stopped moving forward and liked people without perjudice. I will sorely miss her. Thank you for your hospitality.

Our condolences to Lisa, Shirlee's daughter, who we got to know through many contacts among Shirlee, Rosemary Ruether and Gretchen on feminist and Palestine-Israel issues. Also in association with Anna and Fred Anrod. Shirlee was an unique person who will be remembered over many years.

Shirlee was an inspiration to me as one with an inexhaustable passion for peace and justice. I remember the time she gave me gifts to take to her daughter,Lisa, whom I met in Ramallah during a Sabeel Conference.

Shirlee was a valuable, long-time member of the Evanston Amnesty Internation group and will be missed by all of us.

Shirlee Taraki was a volunteer at Mather Pavilion Nursing Home for 14 years. She started by presenting a program on Afghanistan and this grew to a regular cooking class and then to a program called Shirlee & Friends where Shirlee introduced residents to a great variety of her "friends". These could include anyone from a Tibetan Monk to a professional artist to a published author or an Irish Folk Dancing Group.
