Shirley BAILEY Obituary


News Death Notice

BAILEY, Shirley Barr passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. She was 81 years old. She was born on October 9, 1930 in Middletown, Ohio. She was born to Georgetta (Philhower) and Harry W. Barr. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, George W. Barr and Donald Harry Barr. Shirley graduated from Middletown High School in 1948. She met with her classmates once a month until her recent illness prevented her from being able to attend. After high school she went to work for Armco Steel at their General Offices. She left Armco to earn her Bachelor of Art degree in Education in Chicago at the Baptist Missionary Training School. She graduated after four years, and upon leaving Chicago, Shirley moved to Detroit, MI for a position as Director of Christian Education at the Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church, where she started five youth programs. She left Detroit to return to Ohio and marry Howard W. Bailey on April 23, 1955. Shirley taught school for the Dayton Church Federation as a weekday Church School teacher and worked summers at the Dayton Christian Center. She is survived by her loving Husband of 57 years, Howard W. Bailey; Son, Mark E. Bailey (Debbie), of Dayton, OH; Daughter, Lori B. Conner (Skip), of Dayton, OH; Three step-grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren. As well as one sister, Karen Alfrey of Middletown, OH and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley and Howard worked hard for forty years as charter members at the Dorothy Lane American Baptist Church and was a member of the Central Christian Church in Kettering, Ohio at the time of her death. Shirley leaves many great friends to cherish her memory and loyal devotion. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012, at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME-BEAVERCREEK CHAPEL, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Road at Grange Hall Road. Pastors C. Roland Marcus and Douglas Shoaff officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services on Friday. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.tobiasfuneralhome.com.

Shirley and I were cousins, but it was only the last few years that we became close as family and friends. I will miss her sense of humor and her phone calls. She was a good Christian lady and has been received by the Lord with a glad heart. Rest in Peace, Shirley.
