Shirley Lee Obituary

LEE
Shirley Ann Lee, our beloved mother, Nana, sister and friend, passed away Sunday April 3rd after a courageous 42 day battle at Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. She was born Dec. 18, 1944 in San Antonio to the late Monroe and Roselyn (McLean) Classen. Shirley graduated from Macarthur HS with the Class of 1963. Over the years she spoke fondly of her schoolgirl days and the many friends she had as well as how much she enjoyed attending Macarthur HS reunions. She grew up with her siblings on Redland Road on their families section of the Classen Ranch. Shirley often spoke about her days cleaning the chicken house, helping take care of her siblings, and all the other fun stuff you get to do while living in the country. We believe her love of family, nature, gardening, cooking and flowers were all developed during this time. For those who knew Shirley, they know all of those passions to be close to her heart. We also know she was tough as nails. She was a tireless worker that fought for everything that she ever had in life. These strengths were balanced with an immeasurable love for her family, a fun-loving attitude, great humor and always being the life of the party. She was a tall, fair skinned, South Texas beauty with beautiful blue eyes, an unforgettable smile and irrepressible charm. A few years after HS graduation those eyes caught the attention of a young Air Force man in training here in San Antonio named John Lee. Somehow he convinced her to move with him back to upstate New York upon completion of his service. For a girl who grew up with no air conditioning in the South TX heat, the cold winters of Syracuse, Buffalo and Watertown NY were quite a change. She was embraced and loved by all of John's family and has always expressed her love of his parents and sisters. After a brief stint in San Francisco in 1967 and 1968, they made their way back to Syracuse to be married. On Dec. 29, 1969 her first son Mark Alan Lee was born. He was delivered to her in a large red Christmas stocking that is still in use today. Then on Sept. 29, 1972 her second son Todd Alan Lee was born. This brought her tremendous joy and was the beginning of a lifelong dedication and loving devotion to her two sons. This presence and love will be sorely missed but she provided enough in her days to last many lifetimes. Shortly after Todd's birth, the family moved back to San Antonio where she raised her boys and worked as a legal secretary at prominent local firms. Over the next 35 years she developed very special bonds and friendships with many people that will last forever. In Shirley's spare time from work and family everyone knows that she could never get enough of her favorite hobbies. These included a 30 year love affair with her cabin on the Frio in Concan, TX, collecting, buying and selling antiques and depression glass, tending to her plants, flowers and garden and just in general, enjoying life. She was preceded in death by her father Monroe John Classen in 1968 and her mother Roselyn (Gam Gam) McLean in 2004, and by Roselyn's second husband John (PaPa) Mclean. She will be reunited with her parents in heaven and be close to them at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio. She is survived by her son, Mark Lee and his wife Miera of San Antonio; 3 grandchildren, Zachary, Mark and Scarlett; son, Todd Lee and his partner Alex Bolton of Austin; partner and friend of over 20 years Doug Agricola; former husband and friend John Lee and his wife Heidi; Aunt, Jewel Alford; loving sister, Vina Bushman and her husband LaVarre Bushman; loving brothers, William T. (Billy) Classen and his wife Terri of Spring Branch, and Monroe John (Johnny) Classen Jr and his partner Jaynne. In addition to the many special friends and cousins she leaves behind, she is also survived by her nieces and nephews that she loved so much: Lena, Yvette, Natalie, MJ, Lynn, Lara, Lisa, John, Chris, Lindsea and Sara. The family wishes to thank the Surgical Intensive Care Unit nurses and doctors at Northeast Baptist Hospital for their commitment and loving care of her as she fought back all the way until the end. Shirley was one of a kind and our memories of her will last forever. Thank You Mommy! The Family will receive friends on Thursday, April 7, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel.

Our thoughts are with all of Shirley's loved ones. I pray that you all find a sense of peace in the memory of the full, happy life she shared with all of us. Shirley was my comrade & partner in crime. I will miss the unbridled laughter & musings about life that we shared these many years. Shirley & I loved our "good times" at family gatherings & we would always look back & laugh about all of our antics. Doug shook his head in disbelief the one time that Shirley & I did a square dance on the stage at Schroeder Dance Hall. We were fearless together! Thanks for giving us so many good memories Shirley. We love you dearly. Janeen Agricola

Shirley Lee became my friend years ago, when she was Wade Shelton’s right hand over at Shelton & Valadez. Over the years, and over pizza, we’d talk about whether she should seriously sell that depression glass, and what she should do when she left S&V – really retire, stay in the legal profession, open a little shop, putter around the house. Puttering, of course, was never a serious consideration. It wasn’t really a surprise when Shirley continued her work as a legal professional over at Langley & Banack: busy bees need to keep busy. Shirley Lee was an exceptional worker.

My, how she loved her boys. Shirley was so proud of her sons – not just for their accomplishments, but for the men they were and the boys they’d been. I remember her laughing (what a laugh, too) at how California couldn’t take the Texas out of Mark, and how she thought Todd’s collection of lunchboxes was such a hoot. Hoot. Shirley Lee was a hoot.

I can’t count the number of times that I have made dishes using herbs from Shirley Lee’s garden. Especially that basil. Of course, basil does grow well (and fast) here in Texas, but Shirley’s was bigger and better than anything you could buy at the store. Until that big freeze last year, I still had a pot of ivy from a starter I got from Shirley. Shirley was a giver.

Not much got past Shirley Lee. She was savvy and smart and kind. She would boldly tell you what you needed to hear, not just want you wanted. Shirley was a tough cookie.

This afternoon, the day before her funeral, I’m writing this message to those who loved Shirley Lee – particularly her kids and grandkids, her siblings, and Doug – adding my note to the others here. I’m hopeful that knowing our details of how much Shirley was admired and appreciated and loved will be of some comfort to you now, and later.

As well as knowing how sincerely, and with such depth and strength, Shirley Lee loved and took pride in each of you: behind your back, when you weren’t there, you shone in her heart to us all.

My sincerest condolences on your loss, and may God bless each of you greatly.

Shirley was like the big sister I never had. Being such a hard working, motivated soul, in turn, she always encouraged me to achieve my dreams. Go in peace Shirley. We will always smile when we think of you

What can I say about Shirley? She was always the life of the office. She always made us laugh and was such a good hearted person. I am glad I had the pleasure of knowing such a strong woman. She will be greatly missed. I remember at a Christmas party she was the party!! You will be missed Shirley.

To Mark and Todd, although I do not know you all I feel like I have know you both all of my life based on the stores your mom used to share with me. She would love to hear me talk about my boys and she would just laugh her laugh because she swore she was reliving you both and the things you all used to do. She was a wonderful woman. I learned so much from her in the small amount of time i knew her. I will miss her laugh, her wisdom and her good hearteness. She will be greatly missed. She loved her grand kids dearly. She would come to my desk and show all the pictures of the grandsons then what a surprise, Miss Scarlett was born. She kept saying "I don't know what to do with a girl" I told her you know exactly what you are going to do, you are going to spoil her rotten and she did. I will continue to pray for your family in my prayers.

I got to know her as a coworker for six years. It was because of her, I decided to sell Avon for a bit. It was fun! She gave me so many tips and ideas. I remember one of her favorite lipsticks was Terra Cotta Red. She was truly a remarkable person. You'd get a kick out of her laugh. It has been an honor and a pleasure knowing Shirley.

I had the pleasure of working with Shirley at Groce, Locke & Hebdon. To this day, I still enjoy repeating the stories Shirley told about Mark and Todd as they were growing up -- she loved them so! While we are all saddened by the loss of Shirley, we also rejoice in having had the gift of her love and friendship.

To Mark and Todd my sincere sympathy. I loved Shirley and both of you when you were just children. We had so much fun taking you camping and the rest of friends who loved Shirley too. My heart is broken to lose such a wonderful friend. We were going to have a "reunion" in May of all our friends; well, Shirley, that reunion will come later.
