Shirley T. Pinkney was born to the late Elizabeth and Henry Smith on June 1, 1935 in Hoboken New Jersey. Shirley attended the Hoboken public school system and then became a homemaker for Visiting Homemaker Services until her health declined.

On June 27, 1953 she married Nathaniel Pinkney Sr. This union was blessed with three sons and four daughters. She loved the Lord and was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church for over 50 years where she served as a nurse and carried several different positions. Shirley lived a great life and thoroughly enjoyed time with friends and family. She especially loved her grandchildren and had so many good times with them. She was well know and loved for her cooking and opening her door to many children and families in the community. While grieving the passing of this amazing strong and exceptionally independent woman we choose to remember how much happiness she brought daily to the world around her and the joy she brought to all of those she met. She will be missed by many.

Shirley was survived by her husband Nathaniel Pinkney Sr. of 60 years, her six children, Mary Wilson, Lillian E. Pinkney, Cheryl Washington, Gregory Pinkney, Wanda Pinkney Hopson and Greg Wilson who she also raised as her own. She has two son-in-laws Alfred Hopson Sr. and Jerome Washington, one daughter in-law Diane Pinkney and one sister in-law Stella Smith. Tonya Bell-Hargrove her special and oldest granddaughter, twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Elizabeth and Henry Smith, three brothers Thomas, Roosevelt and Henry Smith, one sister Jean Smith and also her two sons Nathaniel Jr. and Nelson Pinkney.
