Shirley Ann Short, 71 of Lexington Park, MD (formerly of Oakley, MD), departed this life on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 in Mechanicsville, MD. She was born the third child of the late William McCormick Short and Cecelia Catherine Jones-Short on March 11, 1945.



Shirley worked as a Geriatric Nursing Assistant with St. Mary's Nursing Center for 15 years, before leaving and joining the United Cerebral Palsy as a Home Health Care Assistant for 17 years until her retirement in 2009. Shirley loved to spend time with family and friends laughing and always wearing a smile on her face. She was a loving and caring person, devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, always thinking of others first. ""To know her was to love and appreciate her.""



She was preceded in death by her parents William and Catherine Short; three sisters, Mary Jane Briscoe, Rosalie Hunter and Mary Walters; aunts, Anna Louise Jones, Mary Ada Carter and Mary Mack; uncles, Bernard Jones, Darby Jones Jr., John Edward Jones, Kenneth Jones, Dawkins Jones, James Mack Sr.; niece, Carla Short and special cousin, Dorothy Dickerson.



Shirley leaves to cherish her memories her loving son, Joseph Lydell Short and devoted daughter-in-law, Yvette Thompson-Short of Mechanicsville, MD; two grandsons, Lorenzo Short, of Lexington Park, MD, Brandon Short, of Buckhead, GA and granddaughter, Ashya Short, of Mechanicsville, MD; one great-granddaughter, LaKeisha Short, of Killeen, TX; two sisters, Grace Short, of Lexington Park, MD and Catherine Washington, of Summerville, SC; brother, James Short, of Lexington Park, MD. She also leaves to cherish her memories Allan Tyrone Seay, Zina Bright, Troy Wright, Robyn White, Kim Campbell, Arnetta Freeman and Robert Isom III (all whom she loved and helped to raise), her longtime friends, Celeste Jones and Audrey Ridgell; her great aunt, Genevieve Short and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.



Family and friends will unite on Friday, October 28, 2016 for visitation at 10 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 21340 Colton Point Rd, Avenue, MD 20609. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Church Cemetery, Bushwood, MD.
