She was passionate about children's initiatives in the city of Houston, supporting education and career advancement with her time, talents and treasures. Many people benefitted from her tutelage, counsel and career planning expertise. Shirley was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, Houston.

Shirley and my father, Frank, who died 15 years ago, grew up together but became deep friends in the last 10 years of my father's life. Shirley became a part of our family, and was with us beside his deathbed. She was an amazing woman. Full of whit and charm and brains and love. My heart reaches out to Glenna, Shirley's best friend who wrote the lovely obituary and was beside her always.
