Shirley Faye Wiggs, age 87, a resident of Washington, NC, passed away Friday, April 28, 2023 at Ridgewood Manor.


Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, May 1, 2023, at Wesley Cemetery in Chocowinity. The family will receive friends and family following the service at the cemetery.


Mrs. Wiggs was born November 3, 1935, in Bath, NC to the late Henry and Iantha Cox. She went to Bath School until age twelve when her family moved to Washington. She graduated from Washington High School in 1954. She married Rayvon Mayo in 1956 and moved to Chocowinity. Rayvon Mayo passed away in 2002. Shirley then married Bailey Judson Wiggs of Washington in 2005. Mrs. Wiggs worked at various jobs throughout her life; telephone operator, tobacco hand, caregiver, and was employed at Hamilton Beach and Weyerhaeuser. Shirley enjoyed crafts and was especially fond of taking trips with the senior center. She was a member of Wayside Presbyterian Church.


Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Diane Mayo and husband Jerry Arnold of Grimesland.


She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, and her two brothers, Jimmy Forest Cox and Holman Cox.


In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Beaufort County Humane Society, P.O. Box 33, Washington, NC  27889.
