Born January 27, 1933, in Hartford, CT to Sidney L. Eaton, Sr. and Jessie (Adkins) Eaton, Sidney L. Eaton, Jr. spent most of his childhood in Needham MA with summers in Sargentville, ME. He was educated at the Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA and went on to earn a degree in English at...

Not sure what to say?

I was very lucky to be a student of Mr. Eaton at the Cate School in 1957. Now I realize that this was his first teaching job. Among other things, he introduced me to Edith Hamilton and the culture of Ancient Greece. We also read Henry V, then Greek to me, sped on by his enthusiasm. I still cherish the beaten-up blue Yale Shakespeare paperback with my adolescent notes littering it. Of all the renowned teachers and professors who have strived to help me figure it all out, none was more...

Sid was indisputably the most important and memorable teacher I had -- at Charles Wright Academy in the 1960s -- and he greatly influenced and inspired my writing career. And, yes, he may well have gotten me into college. I was especially proud to introduce him to the audience at a reading/presentation I did for one of my titles at Powell's Books, some years back, and I sensed it was something he much appreciated. He still sits on my shoulder as I write.... Feel free to call or write me...

Sid was the most influential teacher I ever had. I am sure it was his recommendation that got me into college. I run a school now, and he is the hurdle I hold for being a "great teacher"

Bruce and Stuart - So sad to read about your dad´s passing, but also thrilled that he lived so long and so well. He was a treasure and I will always remember two things about him from my youth. The first is a visual of him bending over somewhere on campus, with his silly cap and his elbow-patched blazer, picking up garbage! What a role model he was for us all on that campus. The second is the joy of Beach, Books and Baseball, which I had the great pleasure of joining him for many times. Well,...

Sending love to Bruce and Stuart and your families. Sid Eaton Junior was an uncle, I guess, the son of my beloved step-grandfather from the time I was three. Young Sid-we only ever called him Young Sid-was in my father, John Cooke´s class at Noble and Greenough School, class of 1950, where Sid Sr. presided over the English Department. What a small, entangled world! We used to see Young Sid and Meg in Needham, MA, and sometimes in Maine when they came east to get a fix of the Atlantic...

What a wonderful person and teacher:). He will surely be missed. I was so lucky to have had Sid as my freshman English teacher at Catlin Gabel. I was fortunate to have been classmates with his son Bruce and be in school when Stuart was also there. We had a lot of fun doing the rummage sale. Sid was such a huge part of that success! My prayers go out to the whole Eaton Family:)
