I met Sid in 1980 when, as a newly minted Federal employee, I was directed to attend a report-writing class he had been retained to teach in Albany, NY. It was one of the most valuable and memorable courses I've ever taken. Years later, as a reports specialist at the U.S. Geological Survey in the early 1990s, I was instrumental in bringing Sid to New Jersey to teach an updated version of the course to the authors whose reports I was then overseeing. I will miss Sid. I first met him in Laie in 1977 where we taught English together at BYU--Hawaii. Later on Sid and I worked as consultants for Shipley Associates. There Sid taught me about business and technical documents, dealing with clients, and how to keep learning about the world of professional communication. Once a year we met for a round of golf as his home course near Farmington, Utah. Visiting us in Laie, he wore a Japanese kimono while playing croquet in our back yard. I...

Sid was a true gentleman. As a friend, mentor and fellow ski instructor we could not have had a more delightful companion, with his ready wit, great sense of humor and entertaining repartee.
