Sidney Leonard Payne
1933 - 2017
On Nov. 16, 2017, Sidney Leonard Payne, son to Leonard and Margaret Payne, passed away peacefully at the age of 84 while at the Hoffman Hospice Home.
Born on Aug. 23, 1933 in Pryor OK. After graduating high school, Sid moved to Bakersfield, CA where he built a thriving trucking business that is currently operated by his son.
In his 20's he bought a motorcycle and started racing. He went on to win two AMA Nationals and carried the national #32 from 1962-1967 before retiring in his 30's. He continued his love of riding through travels by road or by riding in the sand, creating many friendships along the way. He loved the saying "Rubber Side Down". It could be said he passed on his natural talent to his grandson, who won his first AMA National Championship this year.
Sid was a prideful man who believed in tough love and practiced it. He had a big heart and was loved by many.
He leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Carol. He was a father, grandfather and great-grandfather to a blended family with a list too long to name them all.
Funeral services will be held Tues. Nov. 21, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel

Sid, you were always my hero. I watched you race at Sprockets and wanted to be just like you. Thanks for all the memories! I'm sure you " gotter' sideways" in heaven!

Always liked Sid, he used to come into Cycles Unlimited when I worked there. Great sense of humor.
Just learned of Sid's Death.

"Pop" to all the kids, step-children, and sons and daugther's in law who came through his life over the years. You'll always be remembered as my very favorite father-in-law and by far the most fun. Our spirits will meet again.

It was only about six weeks ago that you and I had a very long visit. That will be my most treasured memory of our relationship. You told me that you knew that you would go to Heaven because you accepted the Lord when you were a young man, sitting next to your Mama in the Babtist Church. That was such a sweet memory you shared.
I will hold on to the memories of my teen years spent with you. You made a huge impact on my life, Pop! Until we meet again, thank you for your love and support.
Your daughter, Diana

Thanks for most of my great youthful memories. Watching you on the track was something I eventually grew to do myself, and it can all be attributed to racers like you. It became my life, and still exists to this day. RIP Sid, Rubber Side Down!
