Sol Saporta

Today is November 1st in Seoul, Korea where I work. I am here today thinking of Sol and what a great friend he was. I took Sol's Linguistic's class in 1971. That is where I found out we had a common interest ~ Horses. Sol and I became great friends and spent many years together not only at the track but at many lunches and dinners together. My condolences go out to all the family. I will surely miss my friend and confidant. Rest in peace my friend. You will forever be in my heart and prayers.

I am so glad I met Sol & could call him my friend for over thirty years. We had a lot of fun at the racetrack & at dinners after the races. Sol Saporta was one of the most influential people in my life at and beyond the university. I took two classes from him and bought his books. He made me think so hard my teeth hurt. I loved his spirit and energy and I regret not making an effort to contact him since his retirement. This past week the weather has been glorious. It's the heavens rejoicing at his presence-- enlightening all.

I was one of Sol's students in the mid-70s who admired his wit, intelligence and would never have passed Linguistics without him. Sol was one of those rare educators who made you think instead of having you regurgitate facts. He was a lot of fun too - Sol took a bunch of us to Longacres one afternoon. We all threw money in a pot- he told us which horse to bet on to "show". Unbeknownst to him, we bet on the horse, not to show but to win. Sol was estatic when the horse came in first and...

I'm sorry to hear of Sol's passing but what a life he led! I look forward to celebrating it with you this Saturday.
