Mrs. French helped me when I first came to Michigan in 1971, starting a job as teacher of the deaf in Ida. I had just finished my master's degree in Massachusetts and was surprised to learn that I had to take some education courses in MI (at what was then the normal college in Ypsi) in order to teach here. I had no money for any more courses and was living very frugally until my job started in the fall. She insisted on lending me the $600 dollars tuition for the summer courses and wouldn't...
