Angelus Funeral Home - San Antonio Obituary

Sister Cabrini (Margaret) Cahill, CSB, entered eternal life on Friday, April 5, 2024.  She was born in Ballacolla, Co. Laois, Ireland on March 28, 1928 to Patrick and Annie (Dunphy) Cahill.  She grew up on the family farm with her parents, the youngest of four siblings, all of whom have preceded her into eternal life.

Following her secondary education at the Brigidine School Mountrath, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Brigid (Brigidines) on St. Brigid’s Day in 1948 and professed first vows on August 28, 1950.  She attended University College, Dublin for two years before volunteering for the new Texas mission in San Antonio. She is the last of the original Brigidines here who came to Texas and Saint Paul School in August of 1953. Over the years she devoted herself to education, both as a teacher and principal, at St. Paul and St. Luke schools and the two schools where Brigidines ministered in Beloit, Wisconsin.

Sr. Cabrini was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Anne and Sheila, her brothers, James and John, her niece Stella and her nephews Pat and Barry.  She is survived by nieces Ann, Cabrini (White), Madeline, Kate and Cabrini (McDonnell), nephews Jim and Tony, as well as many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends in Ireland, co-workers, and past-students in San Antonio and Wisconsin.  She will be deeply missed by her Brigidine Sisters and their Associates.

We want to extend our very sincere gratitude to the Seraphic Sisters, the administration, nurses, and staff of St. Francis Nursing Home, for their compassionate and dedicated care of Cabrini for the past nine years.

Visitation will take place at St. Paul Church on Thursday, April 18 at 9:00 a.m. with Rosary at 9:30 a.m.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be at Saint Paul Church (350 Sutton) at 10:00 a.m. https://livestreammedianetwork.com/st-paul-church

Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Sr. Cabrini’s memory to the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows (Seraphic Sisters), St. Francis Nursing Home, 630 West Woodlawn, San Antonio, TX 78212

Not sure what to say?

Sister Cabrini left an indelible mark on my life. Her compassion, patience, and firm yet loving nature shaped my experiences in profound ways. One of my most treasured memories is her affectionate habit of calling me “Frances” in her distinct Irish accent, a nickname she reserved for moments when I had done something playful or foolish. She was truly an unforgettable teacher, and her influence will endure in my heart and in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. - Former...

What a wonderful blessing Sr Cabrini was to the Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) community in Beloit, Wisconsin. Personally she was my 8th grade teacher and I honestly enjoyed my elementary / middle school experience because of her. He compassion for others was evident in all that she did and those who she served. I always remember her being so "cool" because she could talk sports (San Antonio Spurs) with the best of them. Prayers of strength to all of those who were blessed to know her.

Sister Cabrini was a wonderful teacher. I will always remember her kind, but no nonsense, approach to teaching in the classroom at St. Luke's. She guided us through our 7th & 8th grades, and all though our Confirmation. I will continue to fondly remember her as she lives forever in my heart.

Sister Cabrini was my teaching partner while I was at St. Paul's. She never failed to support or advise me when needed and was a bright spot in my day. She always had a smile and always showed me patience. What some took for mild sarcasm I soon found was a very subtle, dry wit that never failed to bring a smile. The strength she shared with me during a family crisis helped all of us and for that alone we cannot thank her enough. Sister Cabrini proved to be the example of who we could be,...

Sr. Cabrini inspired us daily, not only in our spiritual life, but in life itself. She challenged us to be our best selves because she knew the world was tough. Sr. Cabrini was kind and fair to her core. Ringing that recess bell often came to soon and she would always extend our play time another five minutes with a smile. Attending church as part of our curriculum taught us much and Sister continuously challenged us to "be present" and sing loud. She challenged us to utilize the gifts given...

I have fond memories of Sister Cabrini as my teacher at St. Paul's. As others have said, she was strict but fair and if I must say, the most fun of all the nuns. On more than one occasion, Sister Cabrini got me out of a trouble when I was up to too much mischief. At recess, she was the keeper of either the basketball or soccer ball, depending upon our fancy. When said ball was inevitably kicked over the fence, it was Sister Cabrini who dodged the traffic on St. Cloud to retrieve it for...

Sister Cabrini was a wonderful Person with a great heart . Strict but Fair. She was a positive influence on thousands of young minds.
Thank you Sister for helping me.
