Angelus Funeral Home - San Antonio Obituary

Sr. Fortunata (Stephanie) Morales, F.M.I., a member of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (Marianist Sisters) entered eternal rest June 2, 2017, in San Antonio.

She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 10, 1933, to Lucio Pedro Morales and Bonifacia Guinto. More commonly known as Sr. Stephanie, she is survived by her sister, Dominga Joaquin, of Honolulu. Preceding her in death are two sisters, Mary Davis and Adeline Smith, and three brothers, Inocencio, Joseph and Florentino Morales. Sr. Stephanie is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Kenny and John Joaquin, San Antonio, and Mark Davis, Denton.

In 1953, Sr. Stephanie responded to God’s call to become a religious with the Marianist Sisters who had established a foundation in Somerset, TX in 1949. She spent a year there before being sent to Sucy-en-Brie, France to make her novitiate. She returned to Somerset in 1956, after professing her first vows.

Sr. Stephanie received a B.S. in Education from the University of Dayton, Dayton, OH, and a Masters in Theology, Franciscan University in Stuebenville, OH. During her years of ministry, she taught at St. Joseph’s School, Devine, TX and St. James the Apostle School, San Antonio. She also ministered in San Jose, CA, and did formation work for the province both in San Antonio and Queretaro, MX.

Having received training to become a hospital chaplain, she ministered at Nix Hospital for 20 years, until she retired for health reasons. Even then, she continued to volunteer for another 2 years, until she fell critically ill. She loved her ministry at Nix Hospital, and both the staff as well as patients loved and appreciated her for who she was. The Marianist Sisters thank the Nix Hospital administration and staff for the loving care they provided the last three weeks of her life.

Not sure what to say?

I feel great joy and peace that my dear friend, Sr. Stephanie, is with Jesus in heaven. I still use her red paperback Bible which she gave me. Many passages are highlighted in yellow and her reflections are penned in the margins. Stephanie and I roomed next to one another when I was a postulant at the Ligustrum community. Her room was so feminine with a white eyelet bedspread. She invited me to go with her to many evening prayer meetings, including the Anawim Community with Brother John...

I remember and thank God for Sr Stephanie´s life and ministry and our friendship. See my entry below. Stephanie´s and my dear friend Wally Wong is very near to his death from cancer. He lives in Hawaii with his wife Donna. I pray Stephanie welcomes him with great joy. Wally was a firmer Marianist in Cupertino. When he left the order, he continued to live in Cupertino. Marie and Durie knew him.

I love and miss St. Stephanie, but my heart is filled with peace and joy that she is with Jesus in heaven.
When I was a postulant in San Antonio in 1978-79, Sr. Stephanie lived in the next bedroom. Her room was so feminine, with white eyelet curtains and a beautiful feminine bedspread, a welcoming place. Stephanie took me ALL over the city to prayer meetings and family's homes. I'll never forget the night she took me to Wendy's for my first Wendy's hamburger and fries. I felt we were...

Ninang, I am so sorry I was still in Europe in June.

I have returned for a week when I learned you had gone to be with God.

You were one of my most loving parts of my life. I will greatly miss your physical presence; but I do know you have been watching over me all this time.

I continue to sleep with your rosary (along with my Mother's) under my pillow. I love you.

Your First GodDaughter,
Cha

Sister Stephanie will be missed by all that she came in contact with. She had the kindest heart and sweet smile ... Rest in peace Hermana.

To my beautiful Aunt Honey. Sister Stephanie Morales you will surely be miss. Thank you for all you have given me. A part of you will always be in the many nieces and nephews that you left behind. Like you said "GOD IS GOOD" and grandma words "Thank you Jesus". With theses two statement yes God is wonderful and we thank him for his great LOVE. REST IN PEACE MY WONDERFUL, BEAUTIFUL, CARING, AND LOVELY AUNT. Aloha from Hawaii.

Sr. Stephanie was a dear, dear friend of mine. When I was a postulant in 1978-79 in San Antonio, Stephanie took me with her to many Charismatic and Family of Mary (Anawim) prayer meetings as well as visits in family's homes. When I left the FMI and moved to San Jose in 1981, Sr. Stephanie and I renewed our friendship in the Family of Mary there. She gifted me with her red Bible, well used with yellow highlighted scripture verses. When I learned of Stephanie's death in Family On-Line, I was so...

Sister Stephanie, your sweet soul and smile will be missed.

Rest in peace good a faithful servant.
