Macagna-Diffily-Onorato Funeral Home - Rutherford Obituary

Stanley Kopacki, 89, of Rutherford died peacefully at home Monday, September 13, 2021 with Barbara, his wife of 61 years, at his side.

Born in Kearny, NJ to Sczepan and Elzbieta Kopacki, Stanley was a high school science teacher at Kearny High School from 1955 to 1990, retiring as Science Department Chairman. He worked at Sears in the hardware department for 10 years in his retirement.

He could always be seen in witty tshirts and rarely left the house without a hat on. One of his favorites was STP, also known as Stan the Pollock. He raised his four children with a strong love of whimsy and was proud to be known as a smart aleck. Teaching chemistry at his own alma mater gave him opportunities to educate as well as amuse students with such famous experiments as making a hair dance.

He considered his “big win” in life was marrying Barbara on July 2, 1960 and having “four great kids and their spouses plus five grandkids who are also the greatest.” He missed his friends from teaching and his family as they passed ahead of him. He wrote in 2016 “All these people are part of the fabric of my life. Family has been the gold and platinum, friends are the silver and the silk.”

To the next generation he wrote, “First enjoy life and plan for the future. The plans may not work out but be happy anyway.”

His family was everything to him. Besides his wife, he is survived by his 4 children, Matthew, Christine and Daniel Cahalane, Paul Kopacki and Sarah Sussen, Jane Kopacki and Patrick Manion; his 5 grandchildren Joseph Daniel, Jennifer, Samantha, Lukas and Benjamin; and his many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his 5 siblings, Helen McKinnon, Edmund, Bronislaw, Wanda Preczewski and Mary Martin.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Montclair State College. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1956 to 1964. He was a past president of the Kearny Education Association in 1960, and had served on the N.J. Education Association in multiple positions. He was a vice president of the Rutherford First-Aid Ambulance Corps where he was a volunteer on the ambulance squad for many years. He was a former B.S.A. scoutmaster of Troop 166.

A wake will be held Friday, September 17 from 4-8 pm at the Macagna-Diffily-Onorato Funeral Home, 41 Ames Ave, Rutherford, NJ. The funeral service will be held at 1030am Saturday, September 18 at Grace Episcopal Church, 128 W. Passaic Ave, Rutherford. Interment after cremation will be private at a later date.

Not sure what to say?

Although Stan was never one of my instructors we bonded through our common interest in the Emergency Medical Service. We were beginning to form the volunteer squad in Kearny and Stan was a wealth of information. He lived a few blocks from my grandparents in Rutherford and I'd stop by frequently. A more warm and gracious home cannot be imagined. We ate and drank and talked and watched TV. Imagine my deep feelings when I saw my name on the "Adult Friends" phone list on the wall!

In...

In 1978 I was 2 yrs out of High School didn't know what I wanted to do as far as a career.. I went to see Mrs Mc Padden she said " let's go see Mr Kopacki. I think you'd make a great paramedic." I didn't even know what one was. Well, 3 yrs later. I was a NJ State paramedic. Worked as 1 for 10yrs before switching to NYPD. Mr Kopacki and Mrs McPadden changed my life. I write this with grateful tears. Thank you! Rest in peace Sir.

At this difficult time I send my deepest sympathy to my dear cousin Babs and her family. I have fond memories of times when I would visit and share stories of family and friends. I will miss Stan and his kindness toward me.

I would like to send my deepest sympathy to the Kopacki family especially my cousin, Babs. I remember Stan as a very intelligent man who I looked up to when I was young while visiting with my Mom at the house many years ago. It was always fun. Hugs to everyone and I am sure he will be deeply missed.. but his memories will be never forgotten! ❤

I was blessed growing up to have Stan as my uncle. Before he had family of his own he took a great interest in his nieces and nephews and set aside special time for us.
He engaged us in science and always encouraged our educations. The positive influence he had on us and I’m sure on his students as well will live on for generations.

My heart goes out to Barbara, family and friends. Rest in peace Stanley

Barb & Family, So sorry to hear about Stan. Loved his stories he told when you came to the lake. RIP my friend.

May he Rest In Peace! Wonderful, engaging teacher.

Mr. Kopacki was a one of a kind teacher in addition to being a lovely man. I had him for Phys/Chem in the early 70s. He not only taught science but also demonstrated how to be a decent human. Mr. K shared his belief in the lyrics of the Broadway song The Impossible Dream. He was one of a kind. My condolences to his family and friends.
