Stanley Arnold Read

Stan Read was my instructor in humanities at Western Washington State College [now Western Washington University]. He was open, sensible, erudite, and thoroughly human. I learned so much about intellectual life and adult life. I ended up in his discussion section in Fall Quarter 1970 by accident; thereafter, I chose his sections in Winter Quarter and in Spring Quarter quite deliberately. Each discussion thrilled me. Stan chewed an unlighted cigar in his mouth and put his cowboy boots...

I worked for Stan in the late 70s and all of the 80s, he was a special man with a big heart.
