Stevie was my mentor, my colleague and my friend for many years. Her values, her breadth of knowledge, her humor and her authenticity made her both unique and accessible. I knew no one else like her. Having her in my life was truly a gift that I will always treasure.

I am one of those "younger" friends that she gathered around her. Not an Early Americanist, but still better as a scholar, teacher, colleague, and public historian for her friendship and sharp insights. She was also a model of professionalism for me as a working mother, balancing her many commitments, fighting for room to both work and love (and breathe) in a society EVEN MORE toxically patriarchal when she was making her way than it was for my generation. I miss her. She was a wonderful friend, mentor, neighbor. She handed me blunt bits of wisdom about so many parts of my life, including advice about my adult children, which was priceless. A irreplaceable spirit that will be with me always.

We will miss your " lively sense of humor, punctuated by occasional bouts of salty language." The world, and especially that corner of it inhabited by early Americanists living in or traveling through Philadelphia, was a better place because of it. May your ripples be many and enduring.
