Stephen Bartlett Obituary

Old Lyme - Stephen Franklin "Steve" Bartlett, of Old Lyme, passed away at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family early morning Thursday, April 7, 2022. Steve was 72 years old. He was born Nov. 9, 1949, in Providence, R.I., the son of James and Marjorie (Brown) Bartlett.

Steve graduated from Cranston High School in 1967, and attended the University of Rhode Island, where he graduated with a master's degree in ocean engineering in 1973. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves, achieving the rank of captain.

He married Grace LaPlume April 15, 1977 (opening day of the Rhode Island fishing season). After a brief stint with Yankee Atomic in Massachusetts, Steve worked for Ocean Surveys in Old Saybrook, for over 30 years. In 1975, Steve bought a house on Rowland Road in Old Lyme, and it was here where he started a family with Grace and raised two sons, Stephen and Timothy.

Steve was a true outdoorsman. He was always a passionate hunter and fisherman. And even when his physical disabilities prevented him from going afield in later years, he was always quick to share a story. He loved listening to Yankees games on the radio, catching trout, hunting over his Brittany Spaniels, eating Grace's cooking and reading about history. He was an active member of Christ the King parish in Old Lyme, in his working years, a daily swimmer at the YMCA in Old Saybrook, and a life member of Snake Meadow Club in Danielson.

Steve is survived by his wife, Grace, of 44 years; his son Stephen Bartlett, daughter-in-law Rachel Bartlett; grandson Parker Caswell; and granddaughter Elsa Bartlett of Sandwich, N.H.; and his son Timothy Bartlett of Keene, N.H.; as well as his sister Lynne Fitzpatrick of Warwick, R.I., and his brother Michael Bartlett of Bow, N.H.

Calling hours will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Lane in Old Lyme. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Christ the King Church, 1 McCurdy Road in Old Lyme. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, North Shore Animal Rescue, or the Old Lyme Volunteer Ambulance Association. Always a good time when Steve would come to Kansas City and visit. We had a tradition of going to the Smoke Stack where he could get his fill of great BBQ. Steve and my husband Greg went to URI where they met. They hunted and fished together. Sadly, both developed Multiple Sclerosis but Steve always remained cheerful and upbeat. Marilyn Loparto

Grace, Stephen, and Tim -- Not only did I have the priviledge of working with Steve for over 20 years but was friends outside of work with him as well. I remember some Easter and Christmas Holidays at your house, happy hour at your house and my parents, club picnics and dinners, and many other happy times. Those memories will always be close to my heart and Steve will be deeply missed. My sympathy and deepest love to all of you. Lori

I will miss sharing stories with Steve, but will always treasure his friendship, and the memories of chasing birds in Lyme and elk and deer in Colorado with him. His positive attitude and ability to make the best of the hand dealt to him was a true inspiration.

Grace, Stephen, Tim,

In processing Steve´s passing, I´ve been realizing just how much he has influenced my life. Not only professionally when we worked and traveled together for many years, but also on a personal level. I hear his voice often!

I´m grateful, too, that we stayed in touch with periodic phone calls, usually on one of our birthdays or around the holidays. The last time I saw him was during one of his stays in New London. We had such a great time talking and catching up. I miss him already.

I have many fond memories of Steve and his visits out here in "fly over country". Good friends with my husband from URI, hunting together and a very long friendship that lasted for the rest of both of their lives. The fight he put up against his increasing physical limitations was awesome. He will be missed by many. My sympathy to Grace, the boys and their families. Hugs and love, Marilyn

Dear Grace, Stephen and Tim, my deepest condolences on the passing of Steve. I always enjoyed the times we spent together in our younger days. Steve was a true patriot and wonderful man. He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. I know that no words can take away the pain you are going through during this sad time. Steve´s suffering is now in the past as he dwells in our Heavenly Father´s glorious Kingdom. May our Savior Jesus Christ bring you comfort in the coming days.
God´s Blessings,
