DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ An Iowa soldier was killed as a result of hostile action, military officials announced Friday. U.S. Army Reserve Spc. Stephen D. Shannon, 21, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday. He was a combat engineer with the C Company, 397th Engineer Battalion, in Wausau, Wis. The unit arrived in Iraq in September. Its mission was clearing roadside bombs, the military said in a news release. The family had scheduled a press conference later Friday at their home. Shannon, a 2003 graduate from Clayton Ridge High School. He was the second oldest of five children. He attended the University of Northern Iowa where he was a criminology major, the university said in a news release.
