Martin-Mattice Funeral Home - Emmetsburg Obituary

     Stephen "Steve" Gibson, age 77, of Emmetsburg passed away surrounded by his family on October 23rd at the Ruthven Community Care Center.  Memorial services will be 11:00 am Monday October 27th at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.  Inurnment will take place in St. John's Cemetery in Emmetsburg.  Visitation will be 9:00 - 11:00 am Monday at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.


     Steve Gibson, the son of Bill and Geneva “Nema” (Rice) Gibson, was born on December 24, 1947, in St. Joseph, Missouri. He graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1966 and attended Emmetsburg Junior College for 1 year.  On July 20, 1968, Steve was united in marriage with Nancy McNally at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg.  He worked various jobs including manager of the Kum-N-Go gas station in Emmetsburg, Skyjack, and a welder at Snap-On Tools in Algona. Steve was a former member of the Emmetsburg Fire Department.


     Steve enjoyed collecting trains and coins, pheasant and duck hunting, watching his granddaughters play sports especially softball, hanging out with his dog Okie and camping with family and friends.


     Left to cherish Steve’s memory is his wife of 57 years, Nancy; his son Steve Gibson, Jr. (Krista Svalland) of Emmetsburg; 2 granddaughters, Megan (Nathan) Matthes of Indianapolis, IN and Taylor Gibson (Jordan Cody) of Emmetsburg; a brother, Jeff (Lisa) Gibson of Fort Collins, CO; a sister, Jennifer (Walt) Faber of Spring Hills, KS; a brother-in-law, Bobby McNally of Stanhope; a sister-in-law, Jeannie (Roger) Maaland of Emmetsburg; many nieces and nephews; and an additional granddaughter, Hope Markley of Ruthven.


     Steve was preceded in death by his parents Bill & Nema Gibson, his sister Becky Jones, his brother-in-law Art Jones, his grandparents Coral & Theo Gibson and Howard & Grace Rice.

I missed Steve and Nancy when I retired earlier this year and moved away. They always came together for office visits. Their love for each other and mutual support is inspiring. He was a fighter, always with an upbeat attitude. Nancy as well. Stay well Nancy!
