HARKINS, Dr. Stephen W., 67, of Richmond, passed away on May 20, 2010 of cancer. He is survived by his wife, Janice; son, James; daughter, Emily H. Gold (Will); granddaughter, Abigail; brother, Peter B. (Judith); sister, Alice Maniloff, (Howard); two nephews, Mark B. Harkins (Laura Trivers) and Peter T. Maniloff. Dr. Harkins was born on August 20, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Ralph W. and Elizabeth B. Harkins. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. degree in English in 1967 and a Ph.D. in Psychology in 1975. He obtained an M.A. in Public Health from VCU in 2008. Dr. Harkins began his professional career at the University of Washington in Seattle and went on to teach and do research at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a specialist in gerontology, psychophysiology and served as the Research Coordinator of the Dementia Clinic. He was an avid hobbyist, enjoying woodworking, boating and fishing, and photography. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2010, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 7757 Chippenham Parkway, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Trinity Episcopal School, 3850 Pittway Drive, Richmond, Va. 23235.
