Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory - Ballwin Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen Edward Hays, age 66, on July 12th, 2025.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Laura Hays (nee Zach). Cherished father of Douglas Hays (Amy), Sara Schandl (Nathan), and Thomas Hays (Nadia). Devoted grandfather of Jacob Hays, Samantha Hays, Luke Schandl, Charlie Schandl, Emily Hays, and Aubrey Hays. Dear brother of Michael Hays (Carol), and loving son of Clara Lou Hays (late father Harry Hays). Dear uncle, cousin, co-worker, and friend to many.

Steve was the embodiment of warmth, strength, patience, and quiet joy. Steve loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and listening to his favorite music, which always filled the air in their home. But above all, Steve was a family man. Few things brought him more joy than sharing time with his cherished wife Laura-his true partner and best friend. He was happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren, along with his dog Jack.

Steve had a soft spot for every furry friend who came into their life. Steve’s dog, Jack, held a very special place in his heart.

The family takes comfort in knowing that they will one day see Steve again.

Services: Visitation at the Most Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 350 East Fourth Street, Eureka, MO 63025, Saturday, August 2, 2025, 11:00 a.m. followed by Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Chance Ranch

As a service of the SCHRADER Funeral Home, friends may sign the family’s on-line guestbook.

Not sure what to say?

Kevin and I were so fortunate to have reconnected with you and Steve once again over the past 5 years after many years had passed. We have wonderful memories of our times together at the Hanhardt's and Willibrand's. Steve had a big heart, soft spoken and would do anything for anyone. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy and will be missed by many. Rest in peace dear friend.

Steve didn’t know a stranger. From the moment we met him, we felt his warmth and genuine nature. He always had a smile to share.. a real smile, one that was honest and made just for you. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his beautiful family as they honor his life with memories.

Our clan in high school and college was super tight. We had a blast growing up together. Trips to Johnson Shut Ins, Mississippi River Festival, swimming at Lori’s pool and packing into the Chevy Blazer off to our next experience. Such fun.

We all loved each other so much and still do to this day.

Growing up and starting families took us away from each other. However, the memories we made will always be what I think of when I think of Steve.

Love you Bud!!

I have known the Hays family since I was a teenager and have many fond memories of spending evenings at their home. Steve and Laura were always warm and welcoming and I, like so many of us, thought of them as a second set of parents. Throughout my adult years, no matter where I was in life, when I would see Steve and get a chance to catch up, it was always a conversation full of laughter and good memories! Steve was a great man and someone I looked up to as a father figure and a friend.

I am extremely grateful for meeting Steve in the early 2000s. Though the extent of our relationship was limited to lunch and a few conversations following, Steve trusted me enough to introduce his son to me as Doug returned from Australia. That sparked a friendship and business relationship with Doug that's remained ever since. Steve and Laura, you raised a great son and should be proud of the legacy that will live through him to your grandchildren and beyond. Additionally, Doug...

Steve was one of the nicest guys I knew growing up. So sad his life was cut short. God bless your family.

We feel lucky we were able to know Steve and share special days of cards. A wonderful, fun filled, devoted to his family. He will be missed. Our heartfelt sympathy.

From the golf outings, clay bird shoots and all of us on that houseboat at Table Rock. What fun times we
had, just a great guy to be around. Sorry for your loss, with sincere sympathy to the whole Family

We are very sorry for your loss and will pray your family finds peace. Our memories together will never be forgotten.
