Drawn to the Surf
Stephen Hoffman met his wife, Gabrielle, during his freshman year in college when he checked out the girls living below his floor in a coeducational dorm. They dated for more than eight years, and a daughter, Madeline, was born five years after their wedding.
"We loved it, loved it, loved that life," Gabrielle Hoffman said. "We had a great marriage, and we were very much in love."
An avid surfer, Mr. Hoffman, 36, would sometimes get up at 5 a.m. to surf near their house in Long Beach, on Long Island. For that, he was willing to commute an hour each way to and from Cantor Fitzgerald, where he was a trader.
And he doted on Madeline, 5, whom he taught to surf last summer. "She's a little peanut, but she got onto the surfboard six times in one day," Mrs. Hoffman said.
Madeline misses Daddy. She now puts cologne on his old T-shirts and sleeps in them every night.
"It's very hard for her," her mother said. "He tucked her in, kissed her goodnight the previous night. The next day, he got up, went to work and she never sees him again. We are heartbroken."
Mr. Hoffman had an identical twin, Gregory. "Now it's a thrill to see Gregory," Mrs. Hoffman said. "It makes me feel I were seeing Stephen again."
Rest in eternal peace, Stephen. May God bless your family and loved ones.

Mom and I just watched Braveheart tonight! Plus, Madison got engaged last night to a wonderful man named... you guessed it... Steven. We love you, we miss you, and we feel you here with us, always. Your family loves you ! & we know you´re looking down smiling upon us as we traverse these wild waters of life.

23 years and I return to this guest book as I watch the ceremony at Ground Zero. I watch every year to hear Stephen´s name. He IS remembered; he is missed. I continue to send thoughts and prayers to the Hoffman family as time marches on. Stephen´s impact will always be felt.

There are those who say we should all just move on and not read the names aloud. We stand strong as a community and choose to honor and remember the sacrifice of those who were lost. I say aloud "Stephen G. Hoffman" and remember all that his life and spirit meant to so many. The pain does not lessen from his loss and the loss of thousands--but his legacy of love, laughter and family lives on. May God continue to bless Gabe and Maddie and the entire Hoffman family. Rest in Peace my friend.

Once again, here I am on an anniversary we all simply will not, cannot forget. College days have passed, but familiar faces remain etched in my memory. Stephen and his twin Greg are two of many. They had such a "presence" on campus.
Please know that Stephen is not forgotten. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers along with the countless others who flew to the heavens that day.
Warmest Regards,
A Buffalo State Alumni

Twenty-two years later, and I return as I do every year to send a message to the Hoffman family that your tragic loss has not, and will not, ever be forgotten. While time has continued to march on, the memories of Steve (and Greg) do not dim...in fact they grow stronger. Thinking of everyone who was touched by Steve and has suffered his loss. To his family, a friend from Buffalo is sending her thoughts, her prayers, and her good wishes today and every day. Ironically the Buffalo Bills play...

You would be happy to know that your wife is a fantastic mentor. She touched not only my life but also my brothers. She is a tremendous woman, and I know you would be proud. Rest in peace. God bless you and your family.

Another year remembering what we all cannot or should not ever forget. Once again I send out my prayers and warmest regards to Stephen's family including his twin brother Greg. Buffalo State Days...Tower II memories still linger with the two twins that remind me oh so much of those two Weasily Twins in "Harry Potter". They made everyone laugh and enjoy the moment. May your memories of each other make you smile on such a sad day of remembrance. Fellow Buff Stater Tower II (6th floor). ...

Hello My love,
Around we go without you on this crazy planet doing the things we humans do. The day is looming again and all I can do is try to run from it, from the loss of you. We are good, we are strong Madeline and I. We have continued on but never without thoughts and constant smiles of you. I miss you terribly and always wonder what if ?? What if he were still here, what would we be doing? How different my life would have been. There is never a loss of love Este, there is never a...
