TRAVERSE CITY — Stephen Jerome Krieger, age 61, of Traverse City, died Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, in an accident at work. He was born March 2, 1948, in St. Louis, Mo., to W. Harry and Edith (Krueger) Krieger.
Stephen was among the first to attend the newly-dedicated Trinity Lutheran School in Traverse City. He and his family moved to Ann Arbor when he was 14. He attended Slauson Junior High School and graduated from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School in 1965.
Stephen served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Stephen's true passion, besides his family, was working with wood. He was extremely talented at carpentry, woodworking and furniture building. He also worked as an apprentice at Maglia Studios in Detroit, where he learned the art of stained and faceted glass. He worked for 18 years for Bayshore Construction, and the last two years for Hallmark Construction.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 28 years, Janet; two daughters, Mary Catherine (Verlin) Miller of Millersburg, Ind., and Elizabeth Krieger of Goshen, Ind.; stepson, Chris (Tina) Butler of Grand Haven; four grandchildren, Reid, Reilly, Ford and Benjamin; mother, Edith Krieger of Buckley; sister, Kathryn (Michael Gibson) Krieger of Buckley; brother, Timothy (Lynnette) Krieger of New Britain, Conn.; niece, Jennifer Schmidt of Ada; and his beloved dog, Annie.
He was preceded in death by his father, W. Harry Krieger; and a brother, Gregory Krieger.
Since he found so much satisfaction in helping others, his last act was to be an organ and tissue donor. The family would like to express a special thanks to all the staff at Marquette General Hospital for their care and compassion.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 5, 2010, at 1:30 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1003 South Maple Street, Traverse City. A visitation will be held one hour prior, also at the church. Burial will take place at a later date at Botsford Cemetery in Ann Arbor.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, New York, 10004; JDRF.org.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City.
