I first met Stephen at the University of Alabama campus in 1968. As we sat on the steps of the Wesley Foundation complex, he told me of the work that he was excited to be starting: organizing pulpwood workers in Mississippi. Ive known Stephen for over 50 years and although we didnt communicate or visit but a few times during those years, Stephen never wavered from his dedication and commitment to working men and women and their families. Stephen Martin was and is a true and loyal friend to me. I believe that I was a true and loyal friend to him. In addition to being personal friends, we were also fellow strugglers to uplift all communities and to bring about a bit more justice in the world. I looked forward to his late night calls. I looked forward to his sharing and his wisdom. Stephen was such a special person. He felt so deeply for people, and he was so perceptive about people. I will miss him, but I won't forget him. And...
