Stephen L. Schalk, 64, a lifetime Davenport resident, and prominent attorney and real estate developer, died Saturday, November 19, 2011, at his home in Davenport. He was surrounded by his loving family and passed away peacefully, following a courageous battle with Melanoma. Funeral services for Steve will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church, 1702 Iowa Street, Davenport. The Reverend Richard Miller will be the celebrant. The family will greet friends Tuesday, November 22, 2011, from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan – McCabe – DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Stephen Louis Schalk was born February 23, 1947, in Davenport, the only child of John Edgar and Dorothy (Tjaden) Schalk. He was united in marriage to Cindy S. Jensen on July 9, 1977. He graduated from Davenport Central High School, class of 1965, where he had been a member of the state championship two-mile relay team his senior year. He then attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and graduated from Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois in 1969. He received a law degree, with distinction, from the University of Iowa and commenced practicing law in Davenport in 1972. Steve had a nearly forty-year year private practice law career. He was also well known as a talented land and real estate developer in the Quad Cities. He was a member of the Authentically Augustana Campaign Committee, the Davenport Community Foundation Board of Directors where he had served as secretary/treasurer, the Downtown Davenport Development Corporation where he had served as a board member for 15 years including 5 years as president. He was presently serving as the chair of the Scott County Compensation Commission. He was a very civic minded individual and had served as Assistant County Attorney in Scott County from 1973 to 1979. Memorials can be made to Genesis Hospice VNA, First Presbyterian Church, or to Midwest Melanoma Partners at the University of Iowa. Those left to cherish Steve's memory include his beloved wife Cindy; three children and their spouses, Jay Schalk, Davenport, Scott and Amber Schalk, Bettendorf, and Jessica and Craig Burkle, Davenport; and grandsons, Rowan John Schalk, and his newest grandson, Holden Stephen Schalk, born Thursday, November 17, 2011, both of Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents.
