Stephen E. Sokolowski

1928 - 2016

Stephen Edward Sokolowski, of Ivoryton died on June 1, 2016, in Branford, with his daughter Trudy and Bill Banning by his side. He was born on September 1, 1928, in Deep River, the son of Adolph and Emily Sokolowski. He leaves his wife of 65 years, Evelyn Budney Sokolowski, they met at Essex Bowling; his daughter Trudy Sokolowski-Holliday, also of Ivoryton; two grandsons who he adored, Aaron Stephen Holliday of New London and Eric Holliday, US Army; nephews Stephen Occhinaro of Norwich and Allen Occhinaro of Portland; and niece Ellen Occhinaro of Lisbon. He was predeceased by his siblings, Victor, Teddy, Edward "Red", and Walter Sokolowski, Stella Occhinaro, Josie Herel, and Mary Powchaki. He served in the US Army as a gunman in combat in the Korean War. He was in the 224th Infantry Reg. 40th Div. He was awarded the Occupation Medal of Japan, Korean Service Medal with one bronze star, combat infantry badge, overseas bars. He was employed by Conn. Valley Egg Co for over 35 years. When they closed he went to work for Uarco until they moved. He then went to work as a custodian at Valley Regional High School. For many years he loved to ride his Harley, and enjoyed other motorcycles. He took great pride in washing his cars every Sunday, mowing the lawn, and using his 1962 Simplicity to plow the driveway. Most of all he was patriotic and loved his country. He was the Past Commander of the Essex VFW. He was involved in putting on clam bakes, dances and dinners. He was also a member of the Ivoryton Congregational Church. His daughters and grandsons were the apples of his eye. He was so proud of them. Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 6th from 5-7pm at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook. A funeral service will be held on Tueday at 10am at the funeral home.
