Not sure what to say?

For those privileged to advocate before the Court, “SWT” served not only as a familiar emblem on correspondence, but as a reminder of Stephen’s critical role in representing the Court for so many years. His importance was even more evident in all personal interaction. And so, we mourn, “and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring,” with unyielding appreciation, in celebration of Stephen’s contribution. My sympathy to his family.

To Stephen’s family, Phyllis, Andrew and Chad, I express my heartfelt sympathy. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to have shared in Stephen’s life journey. He was an extraordinary leader, a great person and a dear friend. Rest In Peace good and faithful servant, a job well done!

This was one of the most moving tributes I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing your memories of Stephen's life. I met him while I was a Deputy Attorney General representing the New Jersey Courts and he always took a great interest in learning all about the case. He was a most helpful client and a genuine kind human being. It was a pleasure to have had the opportunity to meet him. I never knew that we had the Mets in common!

I knew Stephen professionally, as a member of his staff in the Clerk’s Office. I remember his incredible intelligence, wry humor, professionalism, kindness, loyalty to the Court, and, above all, fairness. My condolences to his family and all those whose lives he impacted.

Asking for continued prayers of comfort for his family. I am comforted in the knowledge that he is with his parents and his sister on the other side. He was my step-uncle and though we didn't see each other often. I appreciated the relationship he and Pam had. He was there for her all the way until her end.

I join so many others in celebrating the life of Stephen Townsend. We shared experiences in bar examining during careers that spanned the same time period. Steve was principled above all else, as well as smart, funny and kind. He was proud of his family — we knew Phyllis, Chad, and Andrew through him even though we never met them. I am sorry his life was cut short. He was a giver, and there are never enough of those. Best wishes to his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Stephen's passing. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Phyllis, Andrew, Chad and all his family and friends. May he rest in peace now.

I'm sorry to hear about Mr. Townsend's passing. He gave me advice and guidance when I was a teenager. My condolences to Mrs. Townsend, Chad, and Andrew.

Steve was a very good lawyer and an equally good person and friend. I worked with Steve when I was Director of the Office of Attorney Ethics (1983 - 2009). He always had great insights into issues we needed to discuss and I looked forward to our meetings and collaborations. I am grateful to have worked with a great public servant. I will miss Steve and trust that he is in a better place now with no pain and no disabilities.
