WINGO, Sterling Lagrand. On July 27, 2012, Sterling Lagrand Wingo heard God's call to be made anew and to dwell in God's presence forever. He joins all who went before him, his parents, Annie Maude and Raymond Wingo; his brothers, Bernard, Billy and Ray; and so many friends with whom he crossed paths. Sterling lived 85 years in this life and each of those years was filled to the brim. He was a native Virginian born in Charlotte Courthouse into a family of modest means and never quit any task. God blessed him with an outstanding mind and body and he developed both to the maximum. He excelled in track, baseball and football at "VPI" predecessor to Virginia Tech. In 1997, he was inducted into Virginia Tech's Football Hall of Fame. He served our country (U.S. Navy) in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. He was a successful business leader retiring in 1983 as a Division Manager with C&P Telephone (predecessor to Verizon). He was an active member of the Catholic church in parishes wherever his job and retirement took him. But, the measure of his life is written most deeply in the hearts of those who loved him and whom he now leaves behind for a while; his wife of over sixty years, Rose Marie; his children, Suzanne (Billy) Lemmer, Patsy (John) Mason, Lee (Michelle) Wingo and Beth (Chad) Myrick; his ten grandchildren, Christian, Clayton, Russell, Alyson and Mackenzie Lemmer, Craig Mason, Samantha, Miranda and Meredith Wingo, and Connor Wingo-Reeves; as well as his sister, Anne Wingo-Kratz. Many others could be mentioned for whom Sterling provided support and friendship during most of their lives. Rose Marie's sisters, Suzanne Miller Gallagher and Nancy Miller Raible, and their families were certainly close. The greatest gift of any human being to another is the gift of good memories. Sterling has left good memories with so many. The family will greet friends at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, Tuesday, July 31, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, Wednesday, August 1, at 2pm. Flowers, or in the spirit of Sterling's generosity, contributions to Bon Secours Hospice or a charity of the giver's choice would be most appreciated.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Rose Marie,

Your family has been so very dear to me for so many years. You know I adored your dear Mother, who had the spirit of a giant, and Sterling, who was truly a Giant of a Gentle Man. It was a pleasure to know you all in my work at St. Paul's and a greater privilege to work with you at St. Ed's. I will never forget your many kindnesses to me and I want to express my sincere sympathy at this time of loss. May memories of better days and our shared faith bring you great...

I will never forget the 61 years knowing our cousin Sterling. He was always so much fun to be with. Bud, Jerrie and I will never forget our great visit with Sterling and Rose in April, 2011. We loved hearing his life stories. God Bless his loving and dedicated companion and soulmate, Rose.

It was such a great privilege to learn to know Sterling and to see his warm smile as he walked around Summerhill. We'll miss that warm smile. Rose, you were a delightful companion and support to Sterling. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I loved Sterling's sense of humor. He could always make me laugh. My love to you Rose.

I am so sorry to hear of Sterling's passing.

We lost yet another outstanding citizen and manager. I met Sterling in 1967 and he provided my with many values that still surround my life's energies.

I sincerely wish his family to remember his life and its value without focusing on his passing. It was his life that was important and not his death.

May God bless him and his family,

John
