WINGO, Sterling Lagrand. On July 27, 2012, Sterling Lagrand Wingo heard God's call to be made anew and to dwell in God's presence forever. He joins all who went before him, his parents, Annie Maude and Raymond Wingo; his brothers, Bernard, Billy and Ray; and so many friends with whom he crossed paths. Sterling lived 85 years in this life and each of those years was filled to the brim. He was a native Virginian born in Charlotte Courthouse into a family of modest means and never quit any task. God blessed him with an outstanding mind and body and he developed both to the maximum. He excelled in track, baseball and football at "VPI" predecessor to Virginia Tech. In 1997, he was inducted into Virginia Tech's Football Hall of Fame. He served our country (U.S. Navy) in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. He was a successful business leader retiring in 1983 as a Division Manager with C&P Telephone (predecessor to Verizon). He was an active member of the Catholic church in parishes wherever his job and retirement took him. But, the measure of his life is written most deeply in the hearts of those who loved him and whom he now leaves behind for a while; his wife of over sixty years, Rose Marie; his children, Suzanne (Billy) Lemmer, Patsy (John) Mason, Lee (Michelle) Wingo and Beth (Chad) Myrick; his ten grandchildren, Christian, Clayton, Russell, Alyson and Mackenzie Lemmer, Craig Mason, Samantha, Miranda and Meredith Wingo, and Connor Wingo-Reeves; as well as his sister, Anne Wingo-Kratz. Many others could be mentioned for whom Sterling provided support and friendship during most of their lives. Rose Marie's sisters, Suzanne Miller Gallagher and Nancy Miller Raible, and their families were certainly close. The greatest gift of any human being to another is the gift of good memories. Sterling has left good memories with so many. The family will greet friends at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, Tuesday, July 31, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, Wednesday, August 1, at 2pm. Flowers, or in the spirit of Sterling's generosity, contributions to Bon Secours Hospice or a charity of the giver's choice would be most appreciated.
