When he was not spending time with lifelong friends or family, Steve could be found at Miracle Mile Deli at Park Central Mall (aka "the office"), McGurkee's, watching sports, antiquing or advocating for the transplant community. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday June 21, 2014 at 11am Friday's Front Row Sports Grill at Chase Field 401 East Jefferson Street Phoenix 85004. Casual. Steve and I became friends in the 2nd grade at Kenilworth. He was an excellent athlete, I was blessed to have him as a friend for seventy years. I wish that he could have joined so many of his life long friends by being with us at West High.

I have happy memories of Steve during our days at P.U.H.S. We were in some of the same classes from the time we were freshmen. I haven't talked with him in a very long time, but he is one of the nicest people I've known, fun, easy to talk to, a good friend. My sympathy to all of his family and know that he has a special place in the memories of his friends. Barbara Barr Montgomery

I've known Steve almost since I joined the Phoenix Police Department in 1960 and had the privilege of counting myself his friend in later years. He was an excellent officer and investigator and did an outstanding job in whatever he put his hand to. I will truly miss lunches with him and listening his stories of his early life and experiences. My condolences to his family in their loss.

I knew and worked with Steve on the police department. He was a great cop, friend and one of a kind. Steve had a great sense of humor and was well respected by his peers. RIP Steve. See you on the other side.

My husband and I met Steve over 15 years ago and I can honestly say he was one of the kindest, sweetest men I have ever met. You never knew where or when you would bump into Steve but whether it was at Walgreens or at the baseball field after one of Hayden's games, you could be assured you would walk away smiling - he was just one of those kind of souls. His passing will surely leave a gap in the hearts of all that had the pleasure of making his acquaintance. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those lft behind. Much love - the Benn family

I have known Steve and his family most of my life. Over the years,I would coincidentally run into Steve in central Phoenix and we would have long discussions on any number of topics. I will miss him and our impromptu meetings. May his memory be eternal.

Chris, I would like to express my condolences to you and your family on the passing of Steve. He was a lifelong friend of my dad and the Sanchez family and was considered an uncle to me, my brothers and sisters. His presence at countless family functions over the years was appreciated as well as his gift of storytelling. He will be missed but his memory will remain with us.
