Mary, Melissa, Emily and Katie, Steve was such a remarkable scientist, husband, father and friend. Even before his disease, he lived life to the fullest, taking every opportunity to add enjoyment to the day whether it be going to a movie, dinner out or reading a good book. His bouyant spirit and quest for life did not end with ALS, he somehow managed to strive forward even as the disease progressed. Now he lives on in our heatrs. Our family is forever greatful for the experience of knowing...

Getting to know Steve and Mary Hildebrand this last year was a blessing
in my life. I retired 3 years ago from the Laboratory where Steve
worked, and we interacted with the same scientists, but about a decade
apart in time. I got to know them through the Unitarian Church of Los
Alamos, but unfortunately I didn‚t make a connection earlier.
The few times that I was able to visit with Steve and Mary (before I
broke my leg and have been dependent on friends...

Here's what Steve wrote this in February 2001 in response to a request by our minister, Liz McMaster.
e said, "I believe that life is not fair. However, I think we should accept the challenges. In your attempts to take on life's challenges, you will look either foolish, arrogant, or courageous.
If it appears you are foolish, then it was too difficult a task. You should prepare better next time.
If arrogance is a result, then it was too simple. Don't do it again. If it...

Dear Mary, Melissa, Emily, and Katie,
Steve's strength of mind and spirit were never more obvious than during the past few years, when most of us would have given up in bitterness over our fate. His strengths were matched, or even exceeded, by your
physical strength, patience, love and care for him. We are thankful that Steve entered your life, Mary, and that Melissa, Emily, and Katie remind us of your life together. He will be remembered in admiration and love by all who knew...

I was Steve's Group Leader at EES-4. As a staff member while working at the Lab, Steve had it all together. Everyone in Steve's old group would agree with me. Steve was everything you can describe in a fine individual, an outstanding professional, and an admired colleague. Had Steve died suddenly before disease overtook his body, we would be celebrating a remarkable life, but not nearly so remarkable as the life we celebrate and remember today. As a colleague, Steve certainly was insightful...

Dear Mary, Melissa, Emily and Katie, The overflowing crowds at yesterday's service for Steve are testimony to Steve's affect on all who knew him, but also to your strengths and undying love for Steve and for each other. I am blessed knowing you and will keep Hildebrand memories in my heart. Love, Liz

Mary, Melissa, Emily, & Katie,
We are so very saddened to learn of
Steve's passing...we know he fought
the good fight against a terrible
enemy. Although we only knew you for about 10 months a long time ago in Alief, Houston, Texas, you have all always been in our thoughts. We remember Steve for introducing us to
the first home PC we had ever seen (& I might add our lives have never been the same:-). Mary, do you remember when you watched Scott & Lisa while our...
