Steve Newman

I met Steve when I took the recorder class he offered through Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation more than 20 years ago. When that class ended, I took private recorder lessons from Steve for a couple of years, until he decided it was time for me to "move up" and find a better teacher. I still play recorder to this day. Steve was such a kind and gentle man. I always enjoyed seeing him around town. I greatly admired his devotion to music and all he did for the jazz community with his classes and...

I will miss you Steve. My journey began at your Natural Bridges course in Jazz. It continued with an invitation to the jazz jams at Bocci's Cellar. As my confidence grew, we came in contact again when your beloved wife, Annie, ran the camera for my TV performance with my band. Steve, I will miss your smiling face, words of encouragement and your gracious presence. Your departure will diminish us all.
