This morning I E-mailed Steven to tell him my short story based on our cross country trip ,so long ago, had been published. When my E-mail went undelivered I researched and learned of Steven's death. I was part of that small enclave, members of the Ozone Park Jewish Center that were in essence one extended family . Many of us the children of those times are still friendly. I grew up with Steve in Ozone Park, Queens, NY. He was a special friend in a baby boom neighborhood teeming with kids.
Steve was smart, funny and had the gift of a memory the was enviable. Music heard once, or a passage from a book read once and Steve would have it permanently memorized.

His personality was his "stand up routine". He was a big part of my life and a caring friend and I will miss him dearly.

I am so sorry. I was a law school classmate of Steve's at BU Law School (Class of '79) and sat at his table at our 25th reunion. His sense of humor, which was always wonderful, improved with age! My condolences to Steve's family and friends.

It has been 25 years since I heard Steve's stories about teaching in Harlem -- and I am still relating them to others. Steve was a very funny, wonderful person, and I'm glad his obituary recognises his humor. Part of his teaching story involved his first day at the school. The principal took the new teachers outside the front door for a minute, but then quickly brought them back inside out of fear for their safety.
