I knew Steve as he was growing up; he was such a pleasant kid. My parents (DuBois) had a berry farm on M-37 between Battle Creek and Hastings. In the summer, they would stop by when his dad (my brother-in-law, Richard/Junior) came from Georgia to get Steve for the summer. Junior's half-brother was then my boyfriend, Lewis (Butch) Mercer. Butch and I were married for 20 plus years, and I wish I had seen more of Steve in later years. I heard good things about him and I will always think of him...

Steve & I were step-bothers, & as such, tormented one another in our youth. We traveled different paths in our adult lives & unfortunately never saw much of one another. I followed his adult life thru my beloved step-mother, Sybil. Steve & I were bound together by Sybil, & were both fortunate to call her our Mother.

I worked along side Steve for several years as our jobs at each respective police agency brought us together. Steve was always a happy guy and we had alot of fun working times together. He often spoke of family and his joy of his projects, at home and at the cottage. I was unable to attend his retirement party from East Grand Rapids Police Department, but did speak to him on his last day, to wish him well in his future endeavors.
