Missing my friend, Steve Neil, shortly after the 12th anniversary of his transition. He was an amazing musician who could steal the show with his virtuosity and soulful improvisational excursions. He had a unique technique and was a genius as far as I´m concerned. I remember Rashied Ali´s quartet had a week at the short-lived Downbeat club on 7th avenue in the early 90s. Steve was outta sight on that one, and exceptional on all of the gigs we played together. Safe spiritual journey, my brother.

I’ve never met anyone that approached life and music – they were indeed inseparable to Steve - with as much vigor; an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and the most gentle of souls; the humble master. I cherish the lessons you taught me, you live on in your many disciples.
Much love,

Stevie weevie! Man, it was a pleasure to know you and play with you, especially the gigs we had with Rashied. Your playing was always phenomenal...so comfortable and easy to play with...and when you took a solo, you always stole the show! Your passion for music and life was uncompromised and unequaled by anyone I've ever met. Have fun on the next gig!

Steve you were a light of pur joy whenever those fingers played those strings. To have had the pleasure of playing with you is my eternal blessing. Rest my brother.

Oh Thou Man. Thou art ever toiling on towards thy Lord, painfully toiling...but Thou shalt meet Him. (Holy Qur'an LXXIV)
Steven and I shared many things over many years. I last saw him at a club in W. Hollywood, bent over his bull bass, sharing his extraordinary gift.
I pray He welcomes you into His paradise.
