WHEELER, Steven Earl Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on November 30, 2022, at 75 years of age in his home on Spring Island, South Carolina. He will be remembered for his personal drive and quick wit, love for his family, friends and country and, most of all, as a relentless learner, with a vast mastery of topics broad and deep. Steve was born February 8, 1947, in Lafayette, Indiana, to June Bertolet Wheeler and Floyd Earl Wheeler and was raised in Richmond, Virginia. He received a BS in Engineering Science from University of Virginia, a master's degree in Nuclear Engineering from University of Michigan, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Steve devoted his career to real estate investment and financing serving as Managing Director and co-head of global real-estate finance for Goldman Sachs; CEO of Winthrop Financial Associates, a national real estate syndication firm; and Chairman and CEO of John Hancock Realty. He was also a principal of Hall Properties, Inc, a Boston-based real estate development and property management firm and served for many years as a director of HFF, Inc. and Anika Therapeutics, Inc. Steve is survived by his wife, Sally Wheeler; as well as his former wife, Paulette Kempfer; and their children Justin, Carter, Garrett and Brooke; his former wife, Martha Wheeler; and their children Gates and Cameron; and 11 grandchildren who were lucky to learn about hard work, the importance of education, and the joys of family on visits with their grandfather in South Carolina. A celebration of Steve's life will be held on Spring Island in February. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association (P.O. Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090) or the Media Research Center (1900 Campus Commons Drive Suite 600 Reston, Virginia 20191). Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.

Not sure what to say?

I just learned of Steve's passing today, as I was out for a boat ride with two veterans of Winthrop Financial. I remember Steve could light up a room with his quick wit and sense of humor. I also remember walking the streets of New York with Steve, he was 6'4" and he was one of the few people I know that actually walked faster that me. Those were the 1980s... suspenders, cigars, and lots of chutzpah. I have not seen Steve in many years, but every few months I've wondered where he was and what...

Steve and I were fraternity brothers together at Virginia. We roomed together our second and third years, and then lived two doors from each other on the Lawn our fourth year. Our girl friends, and future wives, became good friends, and we shared many happy times in those days. Steve was my best friend at UVA. After graduation, we each served as a groomsman at our respective weddings. Although I did not realize it then, friendships are fragile. Our paths diverged, and I only made...

I remember Steve as a very upbeat & humorous guy. He was very friendly & I'm not at all surprised that he was as successful as he was. I also recall, hopefully correctly, that he was a fine basketball player at TJ. So sorry for his loss.

So sorry to hear of Steve´s passing. He and I were friends back in Richmond in the pre-teen days and I remember us walking near his house or mine in the West End just after a huge storm where tree branches and limbs were down everywhere. He was a warm funny kid, easy to befriend and like! From the write up I see that his personality held him in good stead throughout his life!
