MANGES, Stewart C. - Of Flint, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, the day before his 59th wedding anniversary to his beloved wife, Shirley at Genesys Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 1PM Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Tom Sluys officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation 1-4 and 6-9PM Friday and 11AM Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home. He led a very full and happy life. He loved deer hunting, and enjoyed boating, water skiing, scuba diving, snowmobiling, flying (he was a pilot), motorcycling, traveling and photography. He was a great craftsman and could build or fix just about anything. He was a machinist at Buick for 38 years, retiring in 1985. He loved his home and always maintained it meticulously. Gramps for many years enjoyed spending his summers on Bois Blanc Island. The sunset view was very special to him. A unique hobby of his was to think of unusual ways to show his generosity of time and resources. He positively affected many people. Gramps was a very active church member for many years. He was a youth group leader for several years. We can only imagine all the lives he touched over the years, although we have gotten a pretty good idea from the incredible number of thank you notes we have come across expressing words of gratitude for his generosity and support. Gramps spoiled his son Larry, who he always considered his best friend. He moved on to spoiling his grandchildren later in life and did an unparalleled job of it. Words cannot express how special he made us feel all of our lives. Even when he would be exhausted from working third shift, he would still make teddy bear pancakes for us on Saturday morning and watch cartoons with us. Every fall you would find him piling up the leaves just for us to jump in. He always seemed to have the time to do whatever we wanted to do, and it was very rarely that he ever said "no." He was most proud of his great-grandsons, and enjoyed taking them for tractor rides. He leaves his wife, Shirley; grandson, David (Sherry); great-grandsons, Stewart and David; granddaughter, Elizabeth (James); great-grandsons, James and Alexander. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Anna, and his son, Larry. The family would like to thank the staff of Living Joy of Flushing for their kind and loving care of Gramps for the last two years.
