Not sure what to say?

Stew was a wonderful and generous collaborator. He was a treasured friend whose office door was always open. His spectroscopic instrument was shared by many, many students, post docs and Wesleyan and non-Wesleyan faculty. He can never be replaced and is deeply missed. Here is a picture of Stew at what I think was his last talk at U Illinois Molecular Spectroscopy meeting. He had just refused to give up the floor when his time expired.

Stew was such an incredible teacher and mentor. He taught me Quantum Mechanics and the idea that spectroscopy is just applied Quantum. In doing so, he inspired a life-long love of these subjects. He will be greatly missed.

My deepest sympathies to his family, friend, and colleagues. He was a wonderful person. He was a great mentor, and friend. He will be missed. Ranganathan (Ranga) Subramanian

My sincere condolences to his family. He was a brilliant and kind man and I enjoyed my time working with him.

Stew was a true one-of-a-kind. Many will note his professional accomplishments, his depth of learning, his sense of humor, and his passion for teaching. But I will most remember his tremendous generosity to everyone he knew and his fierce devotion to those he counted as his friends. My sincere condolences to his family and all whose lives he touched.
