STUART LEVINE

Stuart was my colleague both as a fellow faculty member and in the Dean´s office, and a good friend over my 19 years at Bard. A valued partner and a great friend!

We have had our boat in the same marina as Stuart for years and looked forward to seeing him during the Charlevoix summers. He always had a smile and we exchanged pleasantries on the docks as he returned from his daily fishing trips. Jim was usually grilling something and teased Stuart about catching the same fish over and over. Last summer was special because we sat with him at the Irish customer appreciation dinner and had the opportunity to get to know him a little better. We will miss him.

For the too few years I've known Stuart, I've referred to him as my grandfather. I met him first as a student, where he quickly took me aside and demonstrated his overwhelmingly sensitive approach as mentor, caregiver, and beacon; hours of conversations considering the wonders of philosophy, the mind, learning, and human integrity, all met with the consideration that there was little difference between him and I. He followed me through these years - even as I graduated and left for elsewhere,...

I worked at Ward Brothers in Charlevoix and loved it when Stuart came to town each summer. Such a dear and caring man. He always took the time to chat and asked about my family. He will be missed. I hope he is somewhere catching those big ones! RIP dear Stuart.

I loved Dean Levine. He was the guy who approved my job as Bard College Campus Leak Checker and got my the assistant to Chinua Achebe. He also gave me two travel grants to travel across the states and then to Turkey with fellow Bard students to make totally meaningless art, but great and lasting friendships. I took several courses from Dr. Levine in the late 60's and early 70's and he was my senior project supervisor. I remember him fondly and he remembered me too on the rare occasions when I returned unannounced to visit Bard. I graduated from Bard and went on to complete a Ph.D. in psychology and then to take an academic position as my career, retiring in 2017.
