Obituary

SOLOMON, Stuart, M.D., passed away quietly at the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He fought a long, tough, and courageous battle against cancer. Dr. Solomon grew up in El Paso, Texas where he briefly attended the University of Texas. He went on to receive a B.S. degree with honors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. He then studied at Carnegie-Mellon University where he received his M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering. He also served active duty in the United States Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky and in the United States Army Reserves with a medical unit in Boston, Mass. He was later awarded his M.D. degree at the Medical College of Virginia in 1969, where he was Chief Resident in Pediatrics in 1972. His list of honors and prizes dating back to high school, college, and medical school are too numerous to mention. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society, the MIT Educational Counsel, and former President of Richmond Pediatric Associates, Inc. for over 20 years. His mind was "an interesting place in which to dwell." Although an active pediatrician for many years, he always was a mentor to students and continued to teach Introduction to Clinical Medicine until the week he was admitted to the hospital. He served on the staff of St. Mary's Hospital, Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital (Medical College of Virginia), Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Richmond Memorial Hospital and Stuart Circle Hospital. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Richmond Academy of Medicine, as well as the Richmond Pediatric Society. Stuart is survived by his wife, Roberta Horne Solomon, who grew up in Boston, Mass. and now resides in Manakin-Sabot, Va. Survivors include his beloved daughter, Carrie Lee Sutherland; granddaughter, Jessica Lee Sutherland of Chesapeake, Va.; and his former son-in-law and good friend, Hinton L. Sutherland. Survivors also include his son, Scott M. Solomon, M.D. of Champaign, Illinois; and his two grandchildren, Andrew Solomon and Katherine Solomon, all of Champaign. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Sara Gregg Kent of Champaign, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday at Temple Beth Ahabah, 1111 W. Franklin St., Richmond. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be sent to the M.I.T. Alumni Fund, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, Mass. 02139. This was Dr. Solomon's favorite college. He was very proud of their ongoing cancer research. No other contributions will be acknowledged by the family. Burial services will be private.

Not sure what to say?

Dr. Solomon was a treasured member of our family community. From the time he became our pediatrician we felt comfortable with his clinical expertise and his warm and caring friendliness with our children. Over the years Dr. Solomon correctly diagnosed several unusual conditions in our children and gave expert care to our physically and mentally challenged son Donald. Our five children and several foster children all felt comfortable with his loving care and friendliness.
We are deeply...

He was my childhood doctor and I still remember that wonderful smile. I was never afraid to see him when I went to the doctor. I am so sad to hear that he has left us. He has touched so many lives, but I just wanted to mention that he also touched my life as well!!
Sending my love and prayers!

My sincere condolences to the family.

Dear Solomon Family,
I am truly saddened to hear of your loss. Dr. Solomon was my pediatrician, caring for me and my 2 brothers from birth until college. He inspired me to become a pediatrician, always taking time to speak directly to me as if my 8 year old opinion was as valuable as my mom's. He touched so many lives, and I'm proud and blessed to have known him. God bless you all in your time of bereavement.

I am sorry to hear about Dr. Solomon's passing. He was my pediatrician from birth to adult. He always made me smile and laugh when I saw him even when I was sick. He was so passionate about his patients and always listened to what the child had to say. It was fun to hear about the "birds" that you had in your ears. Dr. Solomon is the best doctor that any child could ever had have. I am so blessed to have had him as my doctor. I will never forget him, may his legacy live on forever. ...

Dr. Solomon was a brilliant man who shared his wisdom with each parent that visited with their children. He was so practical and constantly reminded us what a gift our children were. As a parent you were always confident of his diagnosis. Thank you Dr. Solomon

Dr. Solomon attended to our son soon after his birth at home. He was the only area pediatrician still attending to home birthed babies. We are thankful he was there for our family and will be forever appreciative.

Dr. Solomon was my children's pediatrician once we moved to Richmond and was able to help them so much with his knowledge of allergies. They loved going to him and he took so much time with them when I knew he didn't have the time to spare. He was dearly loved and missed. He was a fine doctor that I trusted and admired.
May God bless your family during this time and know how special Dr. Solomon was.

I am saddened at the loss of Dr. Solomon. He was the Pediatrician for my daughter, Victoria, back in the 70's. My Goodness! He was so good, kindly, jovial...all the good things you can say about a person, you could say about him! I always remember him with a smile! He made the world richer with his presence! May his soul rest in peace and may God Bless his family! Joan Marie (Sharp) Osborne
