SOLOMON, Stuart, M.D., passed away quietly at the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He fought a long, tough, and courageous battle against cancer. Dr. Solomon grew up in El Paso, Texas where he briefly attended the University of Texas. He went on to receive a B.S. degree with honors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. He then studied at Carnegie-Mellon University where he received his M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering. He also served active duty in the United States Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky and in the United States Army Reserves with a medical unit in Boston, Mass. He was later awarded his M.D. degree at the Medical College of Virginia in 1969, where he was Chief Resident in Pediatrics in 1972. His list of honors and prizes dating back to high school, college, and medical school are too numerous to mention. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society, the MIT Educational Counsel, and former President of Richmond Pediatric Associates, Inc. for over 20 years. His mind was "an interesting place in which to dwell." Although an active pediatrician for many years, he always was a mentor to students and continued to teach Introduction to Clinical Medicine until the week he was admitted to the hospital. He served on the staff of St. Mary's Hospital, Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital (Medical College of Virginia), Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Richmond Memorial Hospital and Stuart Circle Hospital. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Richmond Academy of Medicine, as well as the Richmond Pediatric Society. Stuart is survived by his wife, Roberta Horne Solomon, who grew up in Boston, Mass. and now resides in Manakin-Sabot, Va. Survivors include his beloved daughter, Carrie Lee Sutherland; granddaughter, Jessica Lee Sutherland of Chesapeake, Va.; and his former son-in-law and good friend, Hinton L. Sutherland. Survivors also include his son, Scott M. Solomon, M.D. of Champaign, Illinois; and his two grandchildren, Andrew Solomon and Katherine Solomon, all of Champaign. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Sara Gregg Kent of Champaign, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday at Temple Beth Ahabah, 1111 W. Franklin St., Richmond. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be sent to the M.I.T. Alumni Fund, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, Mass. 02139. This was Dr. Solomon's favorite college. He was very proud of their ongoing cancer research. No other contributions will be acknowledged by the family. Burial services will be private.
