Obituary of
Sue West Baker

Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, Sue (West) Baker, age 69, of Glenwood, died Sunday, June 20, 2010.

Sue was born on July 18, 1940, in Norman, the daughter of C.E. and Pauline Duke West. On January 21, 1961, Sue married Don Baker and they were married for 49 years. She was preceded in death by her father.

Sue was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Glenwood, where she worked on countless church projects. She was also an active civic leader in Glenwood and Pike County. Sue served as Pike County Fair Board President, Miss Pike County Committee Chair, and as a project leader of the Goals for Glenwood committee. She was also active in leading the "Business Appreciation" banquet efforts for more than a decade in Glenwood. Sue received her Bachelor of Arts degree with emphasis in high school English, from Henderson State University in 1964. During those years she was a feature twirler at Henderson, and a member of Delta Zeta sorority. She also won honors in area beauty pageants, including "Miss Malvern." After college, Sue taught English at Kirby, Glenwood, Caddo Hills and Glenwood Christian School. She loved all of her students and did not fail to let them know it. They returned the adoration. In business, Don and Sue Baker made a memorable team at Baker's IGA Grocery, which they owned and operated in Glenwood for 32 years. Though she loved to travel, she understood her first priority, so most of her time was spent caring for her growing family and helping Don.

Sue is survived by her mother, Pauline Duke West, her husband Don Baker of Glenwood, three children and their spouses, Karen and Chuck Voan, Paul and Tamara Baker, Beth and Richard Vines, six grandchildren, Brandon and Candice Vines, Steven Schaberg, Sydney Archer, Nicole and Jon Burton, Adam Baker and Matt Baker; six great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Blakely and Leighton Vines and Chloe, Carter, and Cali Archer, her sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Randy Stuckey, her brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Karen West, her brother-in-law, David Baker and Donna Hutchison, and her sister-in-law, Betty Tidwell, as well as many nephews and nieces and special friends.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life service to be held at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Glenwood, Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 2:00 PM with Bro. Keith Shewbart and Bro. Harold Turner officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. The visitation will be at Davis-Smith Funeral Home in Glenwood, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Vines, Steven Schaberg, Adam Baker, Matt Baker, Jon Burton, Jeremy West, Brian West, Nick Tyler, Tim Baker, Greg Tidwell, Tommy Tidwell, and Terry Tidwell.

Honorary pallbearers include the Pike County Courthouse employees, the "Goals for Glenwood" committee, the St. Joseph Hospital "4th" floor nursing staff, and the Hospice nurses.

Memorials may be made to the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, PO Box 315, Glenwood, Arkansas 71943.

Not sure what to say?

The holiday season is fast approaching, Thursday is Thanksgiving and we are all trying to everything ready. Dad wants us to plan just like you would have. We all miss you so much and we know you are so much better off. We will take care of each other and always caring on your favorite traditions. Love and miss you mom.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome...

We love you Bakers - you will remain in our thoughts

We are so sorry for your loss. May God comfort your
hearts during this time of sorrow.

Such a sweet lady, gone from our midst. She will be missed by all who knew her and by those of us who were just an aquaintance. Our prayers are with her family.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

We send our sympathy and our prayers. We have pleasant memories of Sue from our days at Mt. Ida.
Paul and Pat Bond, Bismarck

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

I just heard about Sue's "promotion"! So sorry for your loss. But, oh, such sweet memories you do have. She was one of a kind, a real lady. She will be missed, but what an addition to Heaven! You are all in our thoughts & prayers. Mills & Margaret Webb
