Susan Gail (Kattenberg) Hughes, 52, passed away December 14, 2011 at her home in Smith Center. Susan was the first child born to Robert "Bob" & Joyce (Winslow) Kattenberg on October 27, 1959. Susan attended the Lebanon school systems graduating in 1977. She then attended Colby Community College graduating in 1978 with a secretarial degree. After graduating college, Susan worked at the State Office Building in Topeka until she married Duane Hughes on December 23, 1978 in Lebanon, KS. They were blessed by four children, Preston, Stephanie, Danielle & Melissa. Throughout her life until her illness hit in 2006, Susan worked several jobs, raised her family and took care of the home while Duane drove truck. Susan loved the Harlan Church, her grandkids and her workers that cared so much for her during her illness. She was preceded in death by her father Bob Kattenberg, grandmother Edna Kattenberg and an Aunt, Donna Johnson. Survivors include her husband Duane of the home; a son, Preston Hughes & wife Sherene of Mt. Orab, OH; three daughters, Stephanie Singh & husband Ray of Colorado Springs, CO, Danielle Hughes & Troy Ratliff and Melissa Hughes, all of Smith Center; her mother, Joyce Kattenberg of Mesa, AZ; her grandfather, Ernest Kattenberg of Lebanon; six sisters, Kim Penn & husband Phil of Assaria, Debra Riggs & husband Wayne of Wichita, Patti Trojanovich & husband David of Buena Vista, CO, Peggy Kattenberg & partner Tracey Budd of Colorado Springs, CO, Kerry Baroni & husband Dan of Buena Vista CO, Sherry Kattenberg of Canon City, CO; two aunts, Waunetta Mullen & husband Don of Lebanon, Martha Peterson & husband Curtis of Smith Center; two uncles, Fred Johnson of Cheyenne, WY, Lynn Winslow of Lebanon, KS; Six….soon to be seven grandkids, Makayla, Michael, Brianna Hughes of Mt. Orab, OH, Kumar and unborn baby girl Singh of Colorado Springs, CO, Ethan & Hannah Ratliff of Smith Center; and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2011 at the Harlan Church, Harlan, KS with Pastor Jim Karg presiding. Private inurnment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center at a later date. There will not be any public visitation, the family has chosen cremation. Memorials may be given to the Harlan Church.
